Endocrine System Short Answer Questions

Answer each of the following questions in the space provided.

1. Describe the function of the endocrine system.
The endocrine system controls nearly all processes in the body through
coordinating body functions such as metabolism, emotions, immune response,
growth and development, sexual function and sleep. It does this by secreting
chemical messengers known as hormones from specific organs known as glands.

2. Give a definition for the term ‘hormone’.

A hormone is a chemical produced by the endocrine glands that acts as a
messenger to communicate with target tissues and organs.

3. Identify how the hormones released by the endocrine glands move around the body.
Hormones that are released/produced by the endocrine glands travel to the
target tissues and organs via the bloodstream.

4. Define the term ‘homeostasis’.

Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal environment of an
organism, irrespective of external or internal changes.

5. Draw an image or flow chart of the body’s response when body temperature increases.

6. Investigate the disease hypothyroidism and describe the symptoms of this disease.
Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland is underactive and does not
produce enough Triiodothyronine (T3) and Thyroxine (T4) hormone. This
causes the person’s metabolism to slow down. People with hypothyroidism
may experience symptoms such as fatigue and low energy levels, weight gain,
intolerance to cold temperatures, depression, thyroid goitre and other symptoms.
In extreme cases, the body’s functions slow to a life-threatening point.

7. Investigate the disease Type 2 diabetes. Identify what gland is not working properly and
what occurs inside the body as a result.
Type 2 diabetes is a condition that affects how the body processes blood sugar
(glucose). Type 2 diabetes results in the pancreas not producing enough insulin
(the hormone responsible for regulating sugar in the bloodstream) or the cells
responding poorly to insulin resulting in too much sugar circulating in the
bloodstream.
