**STRAWBERRY FROM PANCHGANI**

Located around 250km from Mumbai by road, Panchgani is easily one of the most
picturesque hill stations of Maharashtra.
Even before you enter the heart of the town, you will realise that strawberry is
the king here.
Hoardings of strawberry gardens invite you to visit them. Even hotels and
restaurants borrow the
fruit’s name to attract guests. Then there are the umpteen ads about products made
from the fruit.
As you weave your way into the town market and follow the road that goes up to
Mahabaleshwar, you
will find scores of vendors selling fresh strawberries (especially in winter).

There are several strawberry farms around Panchgani, which may allow you to pick
the fruits on
special request and after a short talk on the rules. Usually, you can buy the lot
you have picked.
Most of the gardens also grow other fruits, such as raspberries, blueberries, and
gooseberries.
One of the most popular gardens belongs to Mapro, which started with a food
processing unit in 1959.
They have a food court where the fresh cream and strawberries combo is not to be
missed.

PRICE

Panchagani, which draw tourists by the hordes, register a huge sale of

strawberries between December
and March. The fruit thrives in the cooler temperatures that the two hill-stations
provide. Strawberries
retail for around Rs 60 a kilo and are half that price when sold in bulk.

farmers in india face difficulty in managing the warm winter climates

peak season- winter. it's all about supply. There are times of year where they are
way more strawberries
available. This leads to smaller prices and best of all sales! Starting of the
winter winter (november to march) is when
the supply is usually the highest depending on the weather conditions in the
growing regions.
There will also be period during the late spring and summer were prices will be
good. They are a little bit harder to predict.

EFFECT ON PRICES IN THE ABSENCE OF EFFECTIVE TRANSPORT SYSTEM

Panchgani is famous for its strawberries all over the india. We export oranges and
transport logistics help to deliever
oranges all over the india.

At present there may not be enough drivers available to take the most efficient
routes. This leads many companies
to increase their wages to make a career in trucking more attractive, or to entice
truckers to switch companies.
Salaries are quite attractive, but the end consumer pays the price difference.

As you can see the effect on prices in the absences of effective transportation
system is has many moving parts,
which is where a product transportation broker can assist. Many warehouses and
distribution centers have experienced
the logistic nightmare of working with the wrong transportation companies.

EFFECT ON PRICES IN THE ABSENCE OF SUITABLE WAREHOUSE FACILITIES

Warehouses efficiently and orderly store commodities on a wide scale. They protect
products from fire, wind, rain, etc.
and also minimize losses caused by spoilage, waste etc. This is the fundamental
function of any store. In addition,
the warehouses still serve a variety of different roles today.

Warehouses perform the following functions-

i. Storing goods

ii. Protecting goods

iii. Financing

iv. Risk bearing

v. Processing

vi. Transportation

vii. Grading

Fresh meat, vegetables, fruit, freshly made foods are perishable foods, which
are processed for later use. Such
food is preserved in refrigerators and cold storage to increase their life. Any of
the vegetables and fruits do not
deteriorate or become spoiled unless they are stored properly in a cold storage
(warehouse) spot.

The absence of adequate storage facilities can affect the price of strawberries in
the market. strawberries being perishable goods,
The lack of adequate storage means rodents and other species attacking. Depending
on the extent of the harm, the damage
caused by these infestations decreases market value. It is deemed in some cases
unfit for use and must be destroyed. In the
absence of proper storage facilities, farmers would be forced to sell strawberries
at much lower prices since they have to dispose
of their stock before it becomes unfit for consumption.

FACILITIES AND DUTIES PERFORMED BY STRAWBERRY WAREHOUSES

Since strawberry is perishable in nature, warehouses provide a cool place to store

them as a temperature of 2 to 4 c is
required for storage. It also receives and processes incoming stock and materials,
picks and fills orders from stock,
packing and shipping orders and manages, organises and retrieves stock. Receiving,
put away, storage, picking, packing,
and shipping are also some functions. These are very important as strawberry is
exported a lot—inside the country or area
as well as internationally and this function requires a lot of transporting and
safe storage procedure.
DEMAND AND SUPPLY SITUATION OF STRAWBERRIES DURING HARVESTING SEASONS

With the production of strawberries in the Panchagani-Mahabaleshwar belt expected

to touch 16,000-18,000 tonne this season,
the growers of the fruit in the region have decided to focus on the domestic
market.
The Panchgani-Mahabaleshwar belt contributes around 85% of the total production in
the country. The rest comes from Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
Around 50% of the produce is consumed by tourists. Mumbai and Pune are big markets.
However, demand is growing from new markets
such as Chennai, Bangalore and Goa where containers are being sent on a daily
basis. Since strawberry is a perishable product,
it is very difficult to reach far-off markets. The strawberry season begins from
November and lasts till March every year.

Although export markets seem very attractive, it is very difficult to conform to

their regulations since farmers here face challenges
of erratic climatic conditions and rising labour costs.
