1. Answer two or three questions
1 (a) Relate the story of the birth of 3esus in Bethlehem (Luke 2: 1-7)
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be
taken of the entire Roman world.
This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was govern of
Syria.
Everyone, then, went to register himself, each to his own town.
Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to the town of
Bethlehem in Judaea, the birth place of King David.
Because he belonged to the house and line of David.
He went there to be registered with Mary.
Who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.
While they were there in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have her
baby.
She gave birth to her first son, wrapped him in strips of cloth and laid
him in a manger.
There was no room for them to stay in the inn.

(b) Name any two ceremonies Jewish parents carried out for their newly born
baby boys and state when each one of those ceremonies took place.
Circumcision: Took place when baby was eight days old.
Dedication: Took place when baby was one month old (after 30 days)

2 (a) Describe how God instructed Abraham to keep God’s covenant through
circumcision. (Genesis 17: 10-14)
You and your descendants
Must all agree to circumcise every male among you.
You must circumcise every male baby boy.
When he is eight days old.
Including slaves born in your homes.
And slaves bought from foreigners. .
This will show that there is a covenant between you and God.
Each one must be circumcised a s a physical sign to the covenant.
The covenant with you is everlasting.

Jesus was teaching.
Pharisees and teachers of the law were there.
Some men came, carrying a paralysed man on a bed (sleeping mat).
Tried to take him to Jesus.
Could not pass through the crowd in the house.
Carried him up on the roof.
Made an opening in the roof.
Let the man down through the hole on his bed.
Landed right in front of Jesus.
Jesus saw they had great faith.
Said to the sick man, “Your sins are forgiven.
The religious leaders/Pharisees and teachers of the law, said this was
blasphemy.
Only God can forgive sins, they said.
Jesus said, “Is it easier to say ‘your sins are forgiven or get up and
walk?”
Jesus then said to the man, “Pick up your bed and go home.”
The man stood up at once, picked up his bed,
Went home, praising God.
Were all amazed.
What wonderful things we have seen today.”

A spirit attacks, him with a sudden shout and throws him into a fit.
He foams at the mouth

All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came
from his lips
“Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked
Jesus said to them, “surely you will quote this proverb to me; physician heal
yourself!”
Do here in your home town what we have heard that you did in
Capernaum,”
“I tell you the truth, he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his
hometown.
I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah
When the sky was shut for three and half years
And there was a severe famine throughout the land
Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them
But to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon
And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha “the
prophet
Yet not one of them was cleansed, only Naaman the Syrian
All the people in the Synagogue were furious when they heard his They got

(b) State two ways in which 3esus reacted to this opposition.

He exposed the unbelief and stubbornness of the Jews and told them that
God did not favour them above the Gentiles (foreigners).
Jesus’ reaction was quiet, controlled and powerful.

(c) (i) Chantu is a student at Kapatu University. He refuses to join a

demonstration over meal allowances. Other students criticise him
for his action. He feels bad about the situation; What Christian

8 (a) Give an account of the story of Jesus raising Jairus‘ daughter.

Luke 8 : 40 - 42, 49 - 56
When Jesus returned to the other side of the lake
The people welcomed him because they had all been waiting for him
When a man named Jairus arrived
He was an official in the local synagogue
He threw himself down at Jesus’ feet and begged him to go to his home
Because his only daughter who was twelve years old was dying
While Jesus was saying this, a messenger came from the official’s house
“Your daughter has died,” he told Jairus,” don’t bother the teacher any
longer.”
But Jesus heard it and said to Jairus
“Don’t be afraid, only believe, and she will be well.”
Why he arrived at the house, he would not let anyone go in with him
except Peter, John and James and the father and mother
Everyone there was crying and mourning for the child
Jesus said, “don’t cry, the child is not dead, she is only sleeping They all

9 (a) Discuss how Saul was converted to Christianity (Acts 9: 1 – 19)

Saul still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord
Went to the high Priest and asked him for a letter to the Synagogue at
Damascus
So that if he found any belonging to the way, men and women, he
might bring them bound to Jerusalem
As he journeyed, he approached Damascus Suddenly, a light from heaven
flashed about him
He fills to the ground and heard a voice saying to him “Saul, Saul, why
do you persecute me7
“And he said who are you Lord?”
“And he said, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting but rise and enter the
city and you will be told what you are to do.”
The men who were travelling with him stood speechless
Hearing the voice but seeing Saul arose from the ground
And when his eyes were opened, he could see nothing So they led him into
Damascus and
for three days he could not see, nor ate nor drank Now there was a disciple
at Damascus named Ananias
The Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias
And he said“ here I am Lord”
And the Lord said to him, “Rise and go to the street called straight
And inquire in the house of Judas for a man of Tarsus named Saul

For beheld, he is praying, and he has seen a man come in and lay his hands
on him so that he might regain his sight
But Ananias answered, “Lord I have heard from many about this man
how much evil he has done to thy servants at Jerusalem
And here he had authority from the Chief Priests to bind all who call upon
But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to thy
name.”
Carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the Sons of Israel for I will
show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name
(b) (i) Why was the acceptance of Saul in the church a problem after his
conversion?
Saul before he became a Christian was the leader in the persecution
of Christians.
(ii) How was the problem solved?

Barnabas explained to the Christians how Paul had been converted to
Christianity and that his conversion was genuine

(c) (i) Mr Mulilo has just been released from prison. He goes back to his
former church for worship. Some of the church members shun and

10 (a) Tell the parable of the workers in the vineyard.

Once there was a man who went out early in the morning to hire workers
He agreed to pay them the regular wage, a silver coin a day and sent them
to work
He went out again to the market place at nine o’clock and saw some men
standing doing nothing
He told them, “you also go and work in the vineyard and I will pay you a fair
wages
So they went
A twelve o’clock when he went to the market place and saw some other
men still standing there
And again he did the same at three o’clock
“Why are “you wasting the whole day here doing nothing? He asked them
“No one hired us; they answered
You also go and work in the vineyard, he told them
When evening came, the owner told his foreman, call the workers and pay
them starting with those who were hired last
The men who had began to work at five o’clock were paid a silver coin each
When the first men to be hired came to be paid, they thought they would
be paid more, but they too were given a silver coin each
They started grumbling against the employer

These men who were hired last worked only for one hour
While we put up the whole day’s work in the hot sun, yet you paid them
the same as you paid us
The owner answered one of them, “I have not cheated you. You “agreed IO
do a day’s work for a silver coin
I wan give this man who was hired last as much as I I have the right to do
as I wish with my own money Are you jealous because I am generous?
So the last will be first, and the first will be last
(b) What are the different attitudes towards work that people may have?

“There is only one who is good
If you want to enter life, obey the commandments.” “which ones?
The man asked;
Jesus replied, “Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not
give false testimony, honour your father and mother; and love your
neighbour as you love yourself
“All these I have kept, the young man said, “What do I still lack?”
Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possession and
give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven
Then come, follow me
When” the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great
wealth

Mark 6:17-22
- Herod himself had ordered john’s arrest, and he had him tied up and put in
prison. Herod did this because of Herodias, whom he had married, even though
she was the wife of his brother Phillip.
- John the Baptist kept telling Herod, it isn’t right for you to marry your brother’s
wife.
- So Herodias held a grudge against john and wanted to kill him, but she could not
because of Herod.
- Herod was afraid of john because he knew that John was a good and holy man,
and so he kept him safe. He liked to listen to him, even though he became greatly
disturbed every time he heard him.
- Finally Herodias got her chance. It was on Herod’s birthday, when he gave a feast
for all the top government officials, the military chiefs, and the leading citizens of
Galilee.
- The daughter of Herodias came in and danced, and please Herod and his guests.
So the king said to the girl, what would you like to have? I will give you anything
you want.
- With many vows he said to her, I swear that I will give you anything you ask for,
even as much as half my kingdom!
- So the girl went out and asked her mother, what shall I ask for? The head of John
the Baptist, she answered.
- The girl hurried back at once to the king and demanded, I want you to give me
here and now the head of John the Baptist on a plate!
- This made the king very sad, but he could not refuse her because of the vows
he had made in front of his entire guest.
- So he sent off a guard at once with orders to bring john’s head. The guard left,
went to the prison, and cut John’s head off;
- Then he brought it on a place and gave it to the girl, who gave it to her mother.
- When john’s disciples heard about this, they came and got his body and buried it.

- Here was once a rich man who dressed in the most expensive clothes and lived in
great luxury every day
- There was also a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who used to be
brought to the rich man’s door,
- Hopping to eat the bits of food that fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs
would come and lick his sores.
- The poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the
feast in heaven. The rich man died and was buried. And in Hades, where he was in
great pain, he looked up and saw Abraham, far away, with Lazarus at his side.
- So he called out, father Abraham! Take pity on me, and send Lazarus to dip his
finger in some water and cool off my tongue, because I am in great pain in this
fire!
- But Abraham said, remember, my son, that in your lifetime you were given all the
good things, while Lazarus got all the bad things. But now he is enjoying himself
here, while you are in pain.
- Besides all that, there is a deep pit lying between us, so that those who want to
cross over from here to you cannot do so, nor can anyone cross over to us from

- So get ready and go down, and do not hesitate to go with them, have sent them.
- So Peter went down and said to the men, I am the man you are looking for.
Why have you come?
- Captain Cornelius sent us, they answered. He is a good man who worships God
and is highly respected by all the Jewish people. An angel of God told him to invite
you to his house, so that he could hear what you have to say.
- Peter invited the men in and had them spend the night there. The next day he
went got ready and went with them; and some of the believers from Joppa along
with him.

Acts 5:1-11
- But there was a man named Ananias, who with his wife sapphire sold some
property that belonged to them.
- But with his wife’s agreement he kept part of the money for himself and turned
the rest over to the apostles
- Peter said to him, Ananias, why did you let Satan take control of you and make
you lie to the Holy Spirit by keeping part of the money you received for the
property?
- Before you sold the property, it belonged to you: and after you sold it, the money
was yours. Why, then, did you decide to do such a thing? You have not lied to
people – you have lied to God!
- As soon as Ananias heard this, he fell down dead; and all who heard about it were
terrified.
- The young men came in, wrapped up his body, carried him out, and buried him.
- About three hours later his wife, not knowing what had happened came in
- Peter asked her, tell me, was this the full amount you and your husband received
for your property? Yes, she answered, the full amount.
- So peter said to her, why did you and your husband decide to put the Lord’s Spirit
to the test? The men who buried your husband are at the door right now, and
they will carry you out too!
- At once she fell down at his feet and died. The young men came in and saw that
she was dead, so they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
- The whole church and all the others who heard of this were terrified.

- And he went on to say to them all, watch out and guard yourselves from every
kind of greed;
- Because your true life is not made up of the things you own, no matter how rich
you may be.
- Then Jesus told them this parable: there was once a rich man who had land
which bore good crops
- He began to think to himself, “I don’t have a place to keep all my crops. What can
I do?
- This is what I will do, he told himself;
- I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, where I will store the grain and
all my other goods.”
- Then I will say to myself, lucky man! You have all the good things you need for

They were terribly afraid,
but the angel said to them, Don’t be afraid!
I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people.
This very day in David’s town your Saviour was born
Christ the Lord!
And this is what will prove it to you:

Suddenly a great army of heaven’s angels appeared with the angel,
singing praises to God:

for all they had heard and seen; it had been just as the angel had told

At once, while he was still speaking, a booster crowed. The Lord turned

had said to him,

But he shouted even more loudly, Son of David! Have mercy on me!
So Jesus stopped and ordered the blind man to be brought to him.
When he came near, Jesus asked him, what do you want me to do for you?
Sir, he answered, I want to see again.
Jesus said to him, then see!
Your faith has made you well.
At once he was able to see, and he followed Jesus, giving thanks to God.
When the crowd saw it, they all praised God.

Instead, when you are invited, go and sit in the to 'lowest place, so that
your host will come to you and say,
Come on up, my friend, to a better place.
This will bring you honour in the presence of all the other guests.

5 (a) Narrate the Parable of the Weeds. (Matthew 13: 24 — 30)
Jesus told them another parable: The Kingdom of heaven is like this.
A man sowed good seed in his field.
One night, when everyone was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the
wheat and went away.
When the plants grew and the heads of grain began to form, then the weeds showed up.
The man's servants came to him and said, Sir, it was good seed you sowed in your field;
where did the weeds come from?
It was some enemy who did this, he answered.
Do you want us to go and pull up the weeds? they asked him.
No, he answered, because as you gather the weeds you might pull up some of the
wheat along with them.
Let the wheat and the weeds both grow together until harvest. Then I will tell the
harvest workers to pull up the weeds first, tie them in bundles and burn them,
and then to gather in the wheat and put it in my barn.

The Pharisee stood apart by himself and prayed, I thank you, rod, that I am
not greedy, dishonest, or an adulterer, like everybody else.

I thank you that I am not like that tax collector over there.
I fast two days a week, and I give you one tenth of all my income. But the
tax collector stood at a distance and would not even raise his face to
heaven, but beat on his breast and said, God, have pity on me, a sinner!
I tell you, said Jesus, the tax collector, and not the Pharisee, was in the right
with God when he went home.
For those who make themselves great will be humbled, and those who
humble themselves will be made great.

He went over to him, poured oil and wine on his wounds and bandaged them; then he
put the man un his own animal and took him to an inn,
where he took care of him.
The next day he took two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper.
Take care of him, he told the innkeeper, and when I come back this way, I will pay you
whatever else you spend on him.
And Jesus concluded, in your opinion, which one of these three acted like a neighbour
toward the man attacked by the robbers?

The day came during the Festival of Unleavened Bread when the lambs for the Passover
meal were to be killed.
Jesus sent Peter and John with these instructions:
Go and get the Passover meal ready for us to eat.
Where do you want us to get it ready? they asked him.
He answered, as you go into the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you.
Follow him into the house that he enters, and say to the owner of the house: The
Teacher says to you, where is the room where my disciples and I will eat the Passover
meal?
He will show you a large furnished room upstairs,
where you will get everything ready.
They went off and found everything just as Jesus had told them,
and they prepared the Passover meal.
(b) Why was this gesture (the List Supper/Passover) important to Jesus? State three

9 (a) Describe what happened during the Day of Pentecost. (Acts 2: 1 -13)
When the day of Pentecost came, all the believers were gathered together
in one place
Suddenly there was a noise from the sky which sounded like a strong wind
blowing,
and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire which spread out and
touched each person there.
They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to talk in other
languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak.
There were Jews living in Jerusalem,
religious people who had come from every country in the world.

Persecution helped to spread the preaching of the Gospel from Jerusalem to

(c) (i) At the funeral of the church elder, the Pastor encourage the family
members and the congregation that if they continue to believe in Christ,
they will see the Church elder again. What reasons would the Pastor give
to support his view? State three points.
Jesus was raised from the dead and those who believe in will be
resurrected.
Christ, through his resurrection gives us hope and life forever.
Man has a spirit which will survive death of the physical body, the spirit will
be clothed with another body.
The Bible states that we shall be spirits with "bodies" able to identty each
other and able to continue our individual existence.
Death is not the end; there is a better life with Christ for us after death.

(ii) How do people show respect for a dead person in modern Zambian
They attend the burial.
They say good things about the dead person
The government declares a period of national mourning for as some people
They stand still or stop their cars as the body is taken past
They wear special clothes
(d) Contrast Christian beliefs about life after death with those of Zambian
Traditionalist. State two points.
Christianity: They will have a God-given body.
Z.T.R.: Might be wondering spirits or g00d spirits depending on
how they died.
Christianity: No connection with the living.
Z.T.R.: The dead who are ancestors come to live and have dealings
with the living descendants.

9 (a) Describe how the apostles at Jerusalem sent Barnabas to keep the
church at Antioch. Acts 11:19-26
Those who were scattered abroad after the persecution that arose about Stephen
traveled as far as Phoenicia, and Cyprus, and Antioch
preaching to the Jews first
some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene but when they came to Antioch, they
spoke to the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus Christ.
And the hand of the Lord was with them
and a great number believed and turned to the Lord
Then tidings of these things came to the ears of the Church in Jerusalem,
and they sent Barnabas to go to Antioch when exhorted them all,
that they should cleave to the Lord with their hearts

(d) In what ways are Christian beliefs about the inclusion of people of different
culture similar to that of Zambian Traditionalist? State two points.

10 (a) Narrate the Parable of the Talents. Matthew 25:14 -30

For it is just like a man to go on a journey who called his own slaves
And entrusted his property to them.
To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents and to
Another one talent. Then he went on his Journey.
The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his
Money to work and gained five more.
So also, the one with the two talents gained two more.
But the man who had received one talent went off, dug a hole in the
Ground and hid his master’s money.
After a long time, the master of those servants returned and settled
accounts with them.
The man who had received the five talents brought the other five
Master he said, you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five
more.
His master replied, well done, good and faithful servant! You have

His mater replied, you wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I
Harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered
Seed?
Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the
Bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with
Interest.
“Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten
Talents
For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an
Abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken
From him.
And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where
There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth,

Each person is entrusted with talents.
Everyone has been given at least one talent by God.
We are given talents according to our natural ability to use them
We are all expected to use our talents to the best of our ability.

11 (a) Relate the story of God creating man and woman. Genesis 2: 18- 25
Then the LORD God said, it is not good for the man to live alone.
I will make a suitable companion to help him.
He took some soil from the ground and formed all the animals and the
birds.
Then he brought them to the man to see what he would name them,
And that is how they all got their names.
So the man named all the birds and all the animals
But not one of them was a suitable companion to help him
Then the LORD God made the man fall into a deep sleep,
And while he was sleeping, he took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up
the flesh.
He formed a woman out of the rib and brought her to him.
then the man said, at last, here is one of my own kind
Sone taken from my bone, and flesh from my flesh.
Woman is her name because she was taken Out of man.
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his
Wire, and they become one.
He man and the woman were both naked, but they were not embarrassed.

(b) What are the biblical principles that should guide a Christian in choosing a
marriage partner, Give two points.
A Couple should wait until adequate support is available
Choose a marriage partner who is compatible with her.
A marriage partner should not be chosen out of lust.

Choose a marriage partner who is able to support you and himself

(c) (i) John and Jane have just completed school and decide to live together
without the consent of their parents. As a Christian, advise the two on the

12 (a) Give an account of the story of the woman caught in the act of Adultery.
John 8: 1-11
Then everyone went home, but Jesus went to the Mount of olives
Early the next morning he went back to the Temple. All the people
Gathered around him, and he sat down and began to teach the them
The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees brought in a woman who to
had been caught committing adultery, and they made her stand Before them all.
Teacher, they said to Jesus, this woman was caught in the very act of committing
adultery.
In our Law Moses commanded that such a woman must be stone to death. Now, what

They said this to trap Jesus, so that they could accuse him. But he

as they stood there asking him questions, he straightened up and

committed by à woman but men tend to get away with it
