AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome)

 AIDS is a syndrome caused by a virus called HIV (human immunodeficiency virus).
The disease alters the immune system, making people much more vulnerable to
infections and diseases. This susceptibility worsens as the syndrome progresses.
 HIV is found throughout all the tissues of the body but is transmitted via the body
fluids of an infected person (semen, vaginal fluids, blood, and breast milk).
 HIV is the virus, which attacks the T-cells of immune system. AIDS is the syndrome,
which appears in the advanced stage of HIV infection.
 HIV is a virus.
 AIDS is a medical condition.

1.1. Symptoms

 Rapid weight loss

 Recurring fever , night sweats
 Extreme and unexplained tiredness
 Diarrhea that lasts for more than a week
 Sores of the mouth, anus, or genitals
 Pneumonia
 Red, brown, pink, or purplish blotches on or under the skin or inside the mouth, nose,
or eyelids
 Memory loss, depression, and other neurologic disorders

1.2. Plants having Anti-HIV activity

Following plants are reported to have anti HIV activities

1.2.1. Calophyllum lanigerum

1.2.1.1. Biological source
Calophyllum lanigerum

1.2.1.2. Family
Calophyllaceae

1.2.1.3. Part used

Leaves and twigs of the tree

1.2.1.4. Chemical constituents

The calanolides, a novel HIV-inhibitory class of coumarin derivatives.

Calanolide A

1.2.1.5. Mode of Action

Calanolide A represents a new pharmacological class of non-nucleoside ,HIV-1
specific, Reverse transcriptase inhibitors.Reverse transcriptase is a viral enzyme
essential for retroviruses to replicate, allowing viral RNA to serve as template for
DNA synthesis prior to integrating into the host cell genome.Such RNA directed
DNA synthesis does not occur in uninfected cells, therefore, reverse transcriptase
activity is considered a unique function of the retrovirus. This enzyme present one
of the most important targets for development of selective antiretroviral agents.
1.2.1.6. Uses
 Calanolide A is an experimental compound obtained by Calophyllum
lanigerum having Anti-HIV activity.
 HIV 1 Specific

1.2.2. Castanospermum australe

1.2.2.1. Biological source

Catanospermum australe

1.2.2.2. Common names

Lucky beans plant

1.2.2.3. Family
Papilionaceae
1.2.2.4. Part used
Dried seeds

1.2.2.5. Chemical constituents

The seeds yields an alkaloid of the tetrahydroxy indolizidine group called
castanospermine

1.2.2.6. Mode of Action

Castanospermine exerts its biological effects on insect larvae by inhibiting the
carbohydrase enzymes which are essential for the elaboration of the
oligosaccharides side chains of glycoproteins. This led to the testing of the
alkaloid against HIV on the basis that as the compound inhibits of glycoproteins
in the viral coat ,then without the essential envelope structure the virus would be
unable to infect healthy white blood cell. Two other inhibitors of α-glucosidases
inhibitors isolated from seeds of C.australe are 6-epi-castanospermine and
tetrahydroxypyrrolizidine alkaloid australine

1.2.2.7. Uses
 Anti-HIV activity
 Anti-inflammatory
 Anti-cancer

1.2.3. Tripterygium wilfordii

Tripterygium wilfordii

1.2.3.2. Common names

Thunder God vine

1.2.3.3. Family
Celastraceae

1.2.3.4. Part Used

Dried roots

1.2.3.5. Chemical constituents

Salaspermic acid (Pentacyclic triterpenoid), tripterifordin (diterpene lactone)

Salaspermic acid
1.2.3.6. Mode of action
Reverse transcriptase is a viral enzyme essential for retroviruses to
replicate, allowing viral RNA to serve as template for DNA synthesis prior to
integrating into the host cell genome.Such RNA directed DNA synthesis does not
occur in uninfected cells, therefore, reverse transcriptase activity is considered a
unique function of the retrovirus. This enzyme present one of the most important
targets for development of selective antiretroviral agents.

1.2.3.7. Uses
 Salaspermic acid possess anti-HIV property
 Effective against Psoriasis
 Rheumatoid Arthritis
 Fever
 Swelling
 Regulates immune system
