Fray Botod A Character Sketch
Fray Botod A Character Sketch
Written when Graciano Lopez Jaena was 18, "Fray Botod" can be
loosely translated as pot-bellied friar. Jaena left the Philippines in
1880, shortly after the publication of "Fray Botod," to study
medicine in Spain under pressure from Spanish authorities. As a
caricature and satire on Spanish rule in the Philippines, and the
oppressive influence of the Roman Catholic Church, the story
was symbolic and became an irritant to the Spanish authorities
and an inspiration to the Philippine Propaganda movement. This
was a cause Jaena became closely associated with even in
exile from his home country.
Friar Ano Aragones or known as Friar
Botod is a wicked priest. He will do
whatever he wants to do. Some, he will
do it in sinful way just to have and grant
his wishes. That is how wicked Friar Botod
is.
Friar Botod does not have pity on the
people. He raised his stick to the women
in a cruel manner. He scared those
women so that that will grant his wishes.
When he used to slap the women, they
fell down and look like asking for mercy
but he just drove the women away. That
is how unmerciful Friar Botod is.
Friar Botod is fond of girls. He made the
young ugly girls a maiden but those
beautiful. The young girls and well-
dressed one became his lovers and
followers. That is how fond of girls Friar
Botod is.
