Module 12:

Physical Development of
Infants and Toddlers
1

Prepared by: Cedrick A. Caintic & Waloc

What do you notice?

2
Cephaloaudal and Proxidomistal Patterns

Cephalocaudal

• the earliest growth always occurs at the top

• Infants learn to use their upper limbs than
their lower limbs
Proxidomistal

• the growth starts at the center of the body

and move towards extremities
• developments of motor skills from the
center of the body outward
Height and Weight

• newborn babies drop 5-10% of their body

weight within a couple of weeks of birth
• breastfed babies are heavier than bottle-fed
through the first 6 months
• after 6 months, breastfed usually weigh less
than bottle-fed babies
• weight tripples during the first year, but
slows down in the second year
• infant's length increases by about 30% in the
first 5 months
Brain Development

Myelination/
Myelinazation

- the process by which

the axons are covered
and insulated by layers
of fat cells, begins
prenatally and
continues after birth.
Brain Development

• At birth, newborn's brain is about 25% of its adult

weight. By the second birthday, it is about 75%

• Shortly after birth, the brain produces trillions

more connections between neurons than it can
possibly use.
• Enriched environment can produce positive
changes on child's development

• Depressed brain activity has been found in

children who grew up in a depressed environment.
Motor Development
7

Infants and
toddlers begin
from reflexes,
to gross motor
skills and fine
motor skills.
Reflexes
6

Newborns have
some basic
reflexes which are
automatic and
serve as survival
mechanism
before they have
the opportunity to
learn.
Most common reflexes

• Sucking Reflex - initiated when something

touches the roof of an infant's mouth

• Rooting Reflex - most evident when an

infant's cheek is stroked
• Gripping Reflex - babies will grasp
anything that is placed in their tongue

• Curling Reflex - evident when a baby's foot

is stoked
Most common reflexes

• Startle/Moro Reflex - infants will

respond to certain sounds or movements

• Galant Reflex - is shown when an infant's

middle or lower back is stroked next to the
spinal cord

• Tonic Neck Reflex - demonstrated in

infant's who are placed on their abdomens
Gross Motor Skills
Fine Motor Skills
