Acute Nasopharyngitis
common cold is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. It is the commonest infectious disease in
human which triggers an acute inflammatory disease of the upper respiratory tracts mainly nasal cavity
and pharynx. The inflammation may spread to the adjacent tonsils, sinuses and conjunctiva.
Signs and symptoms
● runny or stuffy nose.
● sneezing.
● coughing.
● sore or scratchy throat.
● watery or itchy eyes.
● headache.
● tiredness.
● body aches.
Diagnostic tests
Throat culture
-a laboratory diagnostic test that evaluates for the presence of a bacterial or fungal infection in the throat. A sample from the
throat is collected by swabbing the throat and placing the sample into a special cup (culture) that allows infections to grow.
Treatment Regimen
Medications/supplements/vaccines:
● nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs - like aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
● mucus thinners - like guaifenesin (Mucinex)
● Lozenges- to soothe a sore throat.
● cough suppressant- for severe cough, such as dextromethorphan (Robitussin, Zicam, Delsym) or codeine
Diet/nutrition
● vegetables
● fruits,
● whole grains,
● fat-free or low-fat dairy products,
● protein foods.
Prevention
● Wash your hands often with soap, especially when around others with colds.
● Wash or disinfect commonly used items, like toys, doorknobs, phones, and faucet handles.
● Use a hand sanitizer when you don’t have access to soap and water.
● Use your own pen to sign receipts in stores.
● Sneeze into a tissue or your sleeve, and cover your mouth when you cough to stop the spread of the
virus.
