ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION SKYHIVE2020 THE ANNUAL BEE BREEDERS SKYSCRAPER CHALLENGE

WHY AS THESIS PROJECT ?

1 One of the basic aim of undertaking this topic as a thesis is to learn the concepts, internal & physical
interrelations & planning ground realities about the designing of a SKYSCRAPER (MULTIFUNCTIONAL
HIGH RISE BUILDING ).
2 According to me this topic has a unique concept of incorporating technological, philosophical, and
aesthetic principles to enhance sustainability within the community. Also, at this level of my professional
degree which is at the edge of completion, I wanted to take up a project which is beneficial for urban
development & economic growth of a locality in which I work upon as economy & social awareness are
the major causes of interactions now-a- days.
3 I wanted to design an ambience for the people to relax & interact with the view of growth &
togetherness.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES:

1 To create a mix of uses that relate to and complement each other through site design, for example,
through shared use of public spaces and landscape connections.
2 To create a mix of uses that respond to their context and complement each other in their building
design and street orientation.
3 To facilitate linkages among uses on and off site through use of pedestrian, bicycle and circulation
connections, shared access and parking.
4 To save the unproductive time that is spent in travelling from workplaces to respective residences
and vice versa by developing a habitable mixed use complex.
5 To develop a complex that blurs the boundaries of various uses, integrates greater social interaction
among all classes of society.
6 To have an architecture design approach, responsible and sensitive, adhering the values of critical
regionalism, energy efficiency, environmental consciousness and social and cultural dependency.
JUSTIFICATION OF TOPIC SELECTION :

1 Designing this SKYSCRAPER mixed use building will give me an opportunity to study how
different uses can be integrated in a same complex/ building.
2 How the different uses can be designed in a single building/complex without overlapping each
other.
3 It will provide an opportunity to study the SKYSCRAPER high rise buildings in detail.

a. The various structure systems involved in a SKYSCRAPER high rise building.

b. The various services required in a high rise building like: - Parking - Fire Fighting -HVAC -Waste
Disposal - Vertical & Horizontal Circulation

SCOPE :

1. The mixed use development by virtue of its need becomes a landmark place and is of PRIME
importance.

2. It is a node of Multiple Activities.

LIST OF STUDY:
1. KOHINOOR SQUARE , MUMBAI.

2. aquaria grande mumbai

SITE:
The participants are permitted to choose a hypothetical site ( 130m x 80m ) accessed by
two roads on both the longer and shorter side of the site.
Participants of the SKYHIVE Challenge are tasked with creating a concept
for a state-of-the-art tower that breaks from the norm.
It can be located in a city of their choice. The site context and surroundings are to be
assumed.
OPTION 2 : NID (National Institute of Design )

INTRODUCTION:
The national institute of design (NID) is internationally acclaimed as
one of the foremost multi-disciplinary institutions in the field of design
education and research.
NID has been recognized by the Dept. of Scientific & Industrial
Research (DSIR) under Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of
India, as a scientific and industrial design research organization.
NID today is premier design hotspot of the country providing
research service and training in industrial design and visual
communication.

AIM:
• To develop design curricula which best support the development of
the creative industries in India through the nurturing of talents, and
which can adapt to support a through train for design education with
emphasis on fundamental knowledge and skills, while promoting a
closer synergy with secondary schools and collaboration with regional
and international institutes.
• To enable the students to develop a sense of social and professional
commitments.

LIVE PROPOSAL SITE :

The proposed NID will be built on 20acres of land in Kurukshetra allotted by the
Harayana Government in India. The site is allocated within agricultural land along the
National Highway 01. The site has 6 acres of its land in the green belt area of national
highway. However 10% construction has been allowed over this area. Total site area
available for construction is 14 acres with Ground coverage of 25%.
SCOPE OF NID :
■ If we look at the current scenario in India we can count the number of
design schools we have on fingers. We have the NID at Ahmedabad
and IDC at IIT Powai. IIT Kanpur. IIT Delhi IIT Guwahati and IISC
Bangalore too have their own small design departments.
■ These design schools are not enough to cater the needs of 1 billion
people in India and several billion people abroad.
■ Most people don't even understand the term design. For
understanding the process of design and that will make another step
forward in the direction of role of architecture in design education.

NEED OF NID :
■ Designing is often regarded as a visionary activity. So in our day to day
life we have to discard our old projects and replace it by new once. For
this we have to invent new products by assistance with consumers,
manufacturers, advisors and designers.
■ Designers must recognize that what is right for some people may be
drastically wrong for others.
