fur of a dead animal) and plant material for warmth, comfort, and
appearance”

• The Silk Trade – came from China and had significantly impacted
the development of other civilizations including Egypt, Rome and
Griechenland

• Medieval Times – Patterning, both through elaborate dying
processes and through hand embroidery also emerged during this
period, heralding the trend toward accessorizing and decorating
clothing elaborately

• Renaissance Period – brought about a great surge in creativity,
daring, and experimentation among dressmakers.
• Complex and fancy clothing was a mark of status, and variations
from the norm were often admired.

• The Industrial Age - dressmaking entered a phase of
productivity that would be unrecognizable by those who
came before
Careers in/or related to Dressmaking
• Dressmaker - specializes in women’s custom apparel,
including day dresses, career wear, evening or bridal wear,
sportswear, etc.
• Tailor – makes custom menswear-style jackets and the skirts
or trousers that go with them, for men or women
• Alteration Specialist or alterationist - adjusts the fit of
completed garments, usually ready-to-wear, or restyles them
Careers in/or related to Dressmaking
• Designers - choose combinations of line, proportion, color, and
texture for intended garments. They may have no sewing or
patternmaking skills, and may only sketch or conceptualize
garments
• Wardrobe Consultant or Fashion Advisor - recommends
styles and colors for a client
• Business owner – owns a dressmaking or tailoring shop
