•When the subject of a sentence
comes before the verb.

Inverted Word Order
•Occurs when the subject comes after
verb, in between verb parts, or not
included at all.

Why use inverted words?

1.For emphasis.
2.Adds variety to the writing.
3.Create an effect.
4.To create rhyme or uphold a
meter that would not work with
the normal word order.
Sometime too hot to the eye of heaven
shines.
And often is his gold complexion
dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometimes
declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course
untrimmed:
