SECULAR MUSIC
Music became a significant
platform used by the Spaniards to
communicate to the native
Filipinos. The arrival of the
western musical form brought by
the Spaniards led to the creation
of secular music. Secular music is
any music not written for the
church.
SECULAR MUSIC
It is not religious in nature. The
vocal secular music of the
lowlands of Luzon was derived
from the foreign social dances
and greatly influenced its style
and characteristics. It is usually
sung in its native language or
dialect.
1. Harana
a. Harana

Harana is a Filipino courting tradition


wherein a man expresses his love to
woman by serenading her.
The man sings a traditional love song
that is usually accompanied by guitar, or
in some, bandurria and violin.
Harana uses the rhythm habanera (also known
as danza), which is in 2-time meter, that is
mostly used in western classical music.
Some folksongs are also used for harana.
Examples of harana are Aking Bituin (O Ilaw),
Dungawin Mo Hirang, Natutulog ka na ba
Sinta, Ang Tangi Kong Pag-ibig, and Kay
Lungkot Nitong Hatinggabi.

2. Kumintang kumintang.mp4
Kumintang was originally a type of war song that
is sung to celebrate warriors’ victory. It later
evolved into a song and dance form associated
with love and courtship. It is described as a
seductive love dance and performed in 3- time
meter. Kumintang could also be themes of
friendship and social criticism. It is usually
accompanied by guitar and bajo de uñas (string
bass). Examples of kumintang are Mutya ng
Pasig, Amihan, and La Tagala.
The kumintang, Mutya ng Pasig,
is a song that tells a story with
two characters – the narrator, and
the river goddess (mutya). This
song is in binary (AB) form and
demands of a singer a dual
identity in order to deliver its
message clearly.

3. Pangdango
Pandanggo is a folk dance that is popular in the
Philippines. It has evolved from the Spanish
courtship dance Fandango, and was later adapted by
Filipinos. The two most popular versions are
Pandanggo sa Ilaw (from Lubang, Mindoro), and
Pandanggo Oasioas (Lingayen, Pangasinan). The
Pandanggo music is in 3-time meter and is also
used in religious activities such as Pandangguhan sa
Pasig, in honor of St. Martha, and Sayaw sa Obando
in Bulacan.

4. Balitaw
Balitaw is a combination of music,
dance, and dialogue about love
between a man and a woman. It is
commonly found in the Tagalog
and Visayan regions. The Tagalog
balitaw is usually in the major key
and the Visayan is in the minor key.

Balitaw is performed in 3-time meter and


usually accompanied by subing (bamboo flute),
castanets, coconut guitar, harp, five-stringed
guitar, or combination of the three. Examples of
Tagalog balitaw are Arimunding-munding,
Bakya mo Neneng, Dalagang Pilipina, and Inday
sa Balitaw.
5. polka
Polka is a lively dance in 2-time meter. It
originated from Europe and was brought to the
Philippines around the year 1859. It was usually
performed in celebrations like fiesta and other
social gatherings. Some of the folksongs of the
lowlands of Luzon have polka in its rhythm
structure like Pamulinawen, Magtanim Ay ‘Di
Biro, Leron-Leron Sinta, and others.
