What is
Belly Dancing?
Belly Dancing is a dance form that
originated centuries ago; it involves
isolating the muscles for moves such as
twisting the abdomen and hip movements.
Performed primarily by women, belly
dancing is a low-impact exercise that could
help people lose weight, tone muscles,
improve their posture, and relax.
Why is it called Belly
Dancing?
The term "belly dance" is believed to have come
from a French term (danse du ventre) meaning
"dance of the stomach." There is really no correct
word or name for this art form, simply because so
many styles and forms of the dance exist in several
cultures.
History of
Belly Dancing
The term "belly dance" is a westernized name that
originally referred to traditional Middle Eastern
dancing. The earliest forms of belly dance were
the Egyptian ghawazi dance during the 19th
century, and Raqs Sharqi,  an Arabic dance of the
20th century. Despite Egypt's location in Africa
and contributions from other nations such as
France, Turkey and the United States, the term
belly dance is usually used today to include all
traditional dances of the Middle Eastern region,
including those not geographically situated there.
What is a Belly
Dancer Costume?
A bedlah is a belly dancer costume with a
fitted bra, hip belt, and skirt. Some may
include harem pants in place of the skirt.
The costume is often elaborately decorated
with fringe, coins, beads, or other
ornamentation. Ballet type slippers may be
worn with belly dancer costumes.

Benefits of Belly Dancing
• Gain strength and tone those muscles - Belly dancing significantly aids muscle toning with its refined
movements of internal muscle anatomy.  Movements were historically created to work those core
feminine muscles such as, the Gluts (bottom), Oblique’s (stomach) and Quads (thighs). It is a great
workout without even feeling like you’re exercising, once you get lost in the music and art form.
• Increase your confidence - Due to the improvement in body image and muscular tone, confidence
levels are naturally increased. Belly Dance, like most other dance forms, allows your body to secrete
endorphins and dopamine in your body - the ‘feel good’ hormones. You are always guaranteed to leave
a class feeling great about your productivity and yourself. Furthermore, as you become familiar with
movements, you will unsurprisingly want to show movements these off.
• Balance and Posture - Belly Dance incorporates many similar movements and postures of Yoga and
Pilates that both work the spine, knees and pelvic areas of the body. Your back, knees and pelvis are all
conditioned to be in the correct stance for healthy execution of movements. Belly Dance works with
the body instead of against it, by providing the correct alignment and poise for mobility and to relive
stress or tension within the body. You will gain flexibility and work to avoid any risk of injury so that you
can move to your full potential.
Benefits of Belly Dancing
• Sociable - Belly Dance Classes are a great way to make new friends who have a
similar interest and to meet people from all walks of life. You can experience your
dance journey together and learn about new people and their stories, which is a great
emotional boost. It is a great way to learn and to develop deeper connections with
other people.
• Relaxation - Belly Dance can be a meditative experience, especially the ‘cool-down’
part of the class at the end with its captivating music! It is a feminine form of exercise
that can provide the deepest form of expression and it is practically ritualistic. Your
mind is settled after a hard day at work and you are fully present in a calm
atmosphere. This experience is highly addictive which will leave you wanting to come
back for more.
Purpose of the
Belly Dancing
• As one of the oldest forms of dance, the benefits of belly dance
are undeniable; Belly Dancing promotes balance, strength,
digestion, coordination and confidence as well as being a fun and
highly expressive dance form. Belly dancing is empowering and
fun, but its health benefits and rewards are highly
underestimated.
