IN THE NEWS: Far-right political parties made significant gains last weekend in elections for seats in the European Parliament.

Right-wingers did particularly well in the two biggest European nations, France and Germany, prompting French President Emmanuel Macron to call snap legislative elections in his country. That is a big role of the dice for Macron. A win for his centrist party would blunt the effect of the EU vote, but a loss that put his opponents in control of the national assembly would stunt Macron’s power in the last three years of his presidency.
