Melania Trump says she realized her and son Barron Trump's lives were "on the brink of a devastating change" while watching a bullet hit her husband.

The former First Lady and her 18-year-old son were not at the horrifying rally in Buttler, Pennsylvania on Saturday night when shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, opened fire on Donald Trump.

Barron did make his first appearance at a Trump rally in Florida, where his father introduced him to the cheering crowd.

The incredibly tall teen stood up and waved to the thousands of people gathered at the Trump National Doral Golf Club in Miami on Tuesday night.

In a new statement after the shooting, Melania declared her unwavering love for the Republican presidential candidate and mentioned fears for their son.

"When I watched that violent bullet strike my husband, Donald, I realised my life, and Barron's life, were on the brink of a devastating change," she stated.

"I am grateful to the brave secret service agents and law enforcement officials who risked their own lives to protect my husband."

Elsewhere in her emotional statement, Melania said she was thinking of her fellow Americans and offered her support to the families of the victims.

She continued: "A monster who recognized my husband as an inhuman political machine attempted to ring out Donald's passion - his laughter, ingenuity, love of music, and inspiration.

"The core facets of my husband's life - his human side - were buried below the political machine. Donald, the generous and caring man who I have been with through the best of times and the worst of times."

Melania has stayed quiet during the 2024 Trump campaign but had been due to appear at the GOP Convention next week.

She added: "This morning, ascend above the hate, the vitriol, and the simple-minded ideas that ignite violence. We all want a world where respect is paramount, family is first, and love transcends.

"We can realize the world again. Each of us must demand to get it back. We must insist that respect fills the cornerstone of our relationships, again.

"I am thinking of you, my fellow Americans.

"The winds of change have arrived. For those of you who cry in support, I thank you. I commend those of you who have reached out beyond the political divide - thank you for remembering that every single politician is a man or woman with a loving family."

Last week in Florida, Trump began introducing his family members to the crowd, including sons Don Junior and Eric, as well as their partners Vanessa and Lara.

"You're pretty popular," Trump confessed. "He might be more popular than Don and Eric. Don, we gotta talk about this."

After a few seconds wondering where Barron was, he finally stood up and waved to the Republican supporters before giving a thumbs up.

Trump, who is shorter than his staggering 6 foot 7 son, said it was "good to have" his youngest at the rally.

He added: "Welcome to the scene. He had such a nice easy life, now it's changed."
