Citybus announced on Thursday that the maiden cross-harbor trip of Hong Kong's first hydrogen double decker bus on Route 170 commences this Sunday.

This milestone achievement coincides with Citybus’ 45th anniversary and the recent release of the government’s “Strategy of Hydrogen Development in Hong Kong”.

Residents of Hong Kong Island and the New Territories will have the exciting opportunity to experience this innovative, zero-emission vehicle operating on their streets for the first time, the Citybus spokesman said.

The hydrogen double decker is scheduled to depart from Wah Fu Bus Terminus at 1.30 pm, bound for Sha Tin Station.

Route 170 is the only franchised bus route in Hong Kong that traverses the city’s three toll tunnels - Aberdeen Tunnel, Cross-Harbour Tunnel, and Lion Rock Tunnel.

The route also holds historical significance for Citybus’ network expansion as one of the first franchised bus routes that Citybus launched in the 1990s through the "Network 26" initiative.

Citybus was the first to offer full air conditioning on the route, and the spokesman stated that they are now providing customers with an even more tranquil, comfortable, and zero-emission bus experience on the hydrogen bus.

Citybus stated that they are fully dedicated to supporting Hong Kong’s carbon neutrality target through their zero-emission campaign #MissionZero, pledging to operate a full-fleet of zero-emission buses by 2045.

The hydrogen double decker has demonstrated a stable and excellent performance during its initial deployment on three Kowloon routes, including Route 20 Waterloo Road Line, Route 22M, and Route 20A Nathan Road Line, starting in February.

They said that they believe the vehicle’s long operating range and short refueling capabilities will be especially well-suited for long-haul routes like Route 170, further demonstrating potential for the critical "one-for-one replacement" of diesel buses in the future.
