Police will be equipped with new Chinese-made semi-automatic pistols starting July 25 the soonest as police said the features and design of the new handguns can better cater to officers’ daily operational needs while enhancing safety.

The two new 9-millimeters models are CF98-A and CS/LP5, replacing the S&M Model 10 revolvers and SIG P250 pistols currently used by constables and crime officers, respectively.

The replacement scheme will be implemented in phases and the first batch of officers to undergo training will include those from emergency units, tactical units, quick response teams and crime detective officers from regional headquarters.

Police refused to disclose the number of firearms purchased and the costs but stressed that the amount will be sufficient for the whole police department. The procurement stringently complied with all government protocols and procedures, police also said.

Police added they had reviewed available choices in the global markets and compared different models before purchasing the new Chinese-made pistols.

Chief inspector Tang Che-leung from the force’s weapon training division said new pistols feature a manual safety pin, greatly reducing the risk of the firearm being discharged by mistake.

The pistols offer an easier and faster reload compared to the revolvers the constables are now carrying, Tang noted.

The design also provides a better hand grip for Asians and reduces the recoil when shooting so that officers can take their aim more accurately and stably, he added.

Training for the new pistols will begin in late July and officers can only carry the new service weapons for duty after passing relevant tests. About 2,000 officers will be trained a year.
