Britain’s double Olympic champion Adam Peaty was left “angered” at having to settle for a “weird” bronze in the 100m breaststroke at the Short Course World Championships in Melbourne yesterday.

The American Nic Fink claimed gold in 55.88sec, with Italy’s defending champion Nicolò Martinenghi finishing second in 56.07. Peaty managed only 56.25 for third place.

“I’m angry with bronze,” Peaty said. “I don’t get bronze often, so it’s a bit of a weird one to have on Wikipedia. It’s my first competition since the Olympics last year. The Commonwealths [this summer, where he won gold in the 50m breaststroke] was just a trial really, after my foot injury.”
