Scottish independence is a movement that aims to restore Scotland as a sovereign state and become independent of the UK. The main political vehicle for the movement is the Scottish National Party, founded in 1934. After the party won a majority in the 2011 Scottish parliament election, the UK government agreed to hold an independence referendum three years later. The plebiscite returned a “no” vote for independence. However, since Britain left the EU there have been renewed calls for a second referendum.
