An 81-year-old Stillwater woman was killed Tuesday morning after she was struck by a garbage truck in the 900 block of Willard St. W.
The woman was standing in the street at the time of the accident, which was reported at 7:45 a.m., said Police Chief Brian Mueller.
The driver of the Waste Management garbage truck, a 46-year-old man from New Richmond, Wis., is cooperating with investigators, Mueller said.
“Early stages of the investigation show that it appears to be a tragic accident,” Mueller said.
Waste Management officials said they were cooperating with the Stillwater Police Department and Minnesota State Patrol and that any information about the accident would be released by the agencies. “We were sorry to learn of this unfortunate incident,” company officials said in a statement.
Police closed the area around Willard and William streets for several hours to investigate.
