Salvation Army service centers around the metro are available as “cooling centers” during hot weather, including on Monday when real temperatures and heat index are expected to soar.

The Twin Cities office of the National Weather Service has predicted the Twin Cities’ temperature could climb into the 90s on Monday, with a peak heat index between 100 and 110 degrees — which could be the summer’s hottest.

An excessive heat warning is in effect until 8 p.m. on Monday.

There could also be strong storms arriving in the metro on Monday evening and lasting into Tuesday, the weather service reported on Monday morning.

Libraries, rec centers and Salvation Army centers

To help the public escape the dangerous heat on Monday, St. Paul Public Library branches and rec centers will also be open during business hours to provide space to cool down.

Although most outdoor municipal pools and water parks have already closed for the season, the Highland Park Aquatic Center is open through Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 2.

On Monday, open swim hours at the water park, located at 1840 Edgcumbe Rd., are from noon to 6 p.m. General admission is $8.

The water park includes a two-story water slide, lap swim pool, whale bone splash pad, children’s activity pool, diving boards, concessions and more.

For beaches, while the ones at Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis remain closed after an E. coli incident, Phalen Beach at 1600 Phalen Drive in St. Paul is open through Labor Day, as well as Schulze Lake Beach at Lebanon Hills Regional Park, located at 860 Cliff Road in Eagan in Dakota County.

Many cities also have splash pads still running, including the one near Phalen Beach.
