Video shows Beryl passing over Houston area after making landfall as Category 1 hurricane

A video from a Houston suburb shows Tropical Storm Beryl passing through Sugar Land, Texas after making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane on Monday.

In the video, trees are seen blowing in one direction, and the extreme winds form waves in a canal, while heavy rainfall reduces visibility.

As of Monday morning, over 2.3 million outages were reported in Texas as the storm barreled through the state with 75 mph winds and 5 to 15 inches of rainfall.

The video was taken at a Sugar Land residence 25 miles southwest of Houston. The home sits on a manmade canal system in Chelsea Harbor, a Sugar Land neighborhood.

Heavy rainfall, flash floods and urban flooding are expected to impact the eastern part of the state, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Where is Beryl?

As of 9 a.m. local time, Beryl was 20 miles west of Houston and moving north at 12 mph.

The storm has sustained winds of 75 mph, and southeast Texas continues to face damaging winds and flooding rain, according to the National Hurricane Center.

"Despite being overland for about 6 hours, (the National Weather Service) radar and surface data indicate that the system has only slightly weakened, with a fairly well-defined eye present," states the National Hurricane Center.

Beryl is expected to become a tropical depression by tonight.

Over the next couple of days, Beryl will travel northeastward, toward Mississippi Valley and into the Ohio Valley until it dissipates in 72 to 96 hours.
