HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) -Like most of the Rocket City, The University of Alabama in Huntsville is growing. University leaders decided it was time to make their school feel more like it was in a traditional college town.

“I think that would help us recruit and retain students faculty and staff,” said UAH Vice President of Finance Todd Barre.

He adds that this multi-year project is going to bring so much more to the university.

“We envision an anchor research building there and some new student housing and then some retail space and probably some build-to-suite office space,” said Barre.

Students at UAH said that this might just be what they are looking for.

“I feel great about this. UAH does a really good job of caring for their students and trying to provide us with the best things possible. so I think it will be a really nice addition,” said Caroline Mills, a nursing student at UAH.

This project is taking place off University between Wynn Holmes and Sparkman Drive and leaders expect to break ground later this year.

“I just think that this is part of the growth cycle of UAH,” said Barre. “UAH is a young institution we have a great research operation here, we have a great student body here and this will only enhance that and help UAH become a more comprehensive university.”

Mills adds that she thinks the university does a great job taking care of students.

“I think it adds more opportunity for students and it gives us just the best resources we have to have the best education possible,” said Mills.

University officials say they hope to break ground in the future.
