NEW Blaenau Gwent MP Dai Davies also took his seat at Westminster yesterday.

Following House of Commons tradition, he was called forward by the Speaker to take the oath of allegiance, flanked by his two 'sponsors', Plaid MP Adam Price and Independent MP for Wyre Forest Dr Richard Taylor.

As he shook hands with the Speaker there were loud cheers in the Commons. One Tory backbencher was heard to shout "There's a traditional socialist" while a Labour voice called out "Enjoy it while you can".

Some MPs and commentators have seen the result as an indication of Labour's inability to win back disaffected traditional supporters.

The previously Labour stronghold includes the former Ebbw Vale constituency once held by left-wing hero Aneurin Bevan and later by Labour leader Michael Foot.

Mr Davies said afterwards, "It was a humbling experience, and I have a great responsibility on my shoulders, following people like Nye Bevan and Llew Smith.

"It was awe-inspiring. I've been around the chamber before, but to actually enter it and be called forward as an MP was amazing, and something I will never forget.

"I am an MP now, and no one can take that away from me."
