One dead in US military Osprey crash off southern Japan

.

At least one person was killed on Wednesday after a United States military Osprey aircraft crashed off the coast of Japan.

Six people were on the aircraft at the time of the crash, which occurred off the coast of Japan’s Yakushima Island in southern Kagoshima, a spokesperson for the Japanese Coast Guard said, according to the Associated Press. The status of the other five remains unknown, as does the cause of the incident.

The coast guard received an emergency call from a fishing boat near the site of the incident, spokesman Kazuo Ogawa said. The Osprey requested an emergency landing at the Takushima airport about five minutes before it disappeared from radar, which occurred moments before that distress call came in.

The aircraft had departed from the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni and crashed on its way to Kadena Air Base on Okinawa, Ogawa explained.

There have been a number of recent Osprey crashes, including one in 2016, where two of the five crew members were hurt when the aircraft crashed off the coast of Okinawa.

Three Marines were killed, and 20 were injured in August in a deadly MV-22B Osprey crash in Australia during a training exercise, which is one of the more recent incidents that put a spotlight on the aircraft.

Various military and department officials have reiterated their confidence in the Osprey aircraft.
