Gaetz vows to be ‘strongest ally’ in Congress to implement Trump agenda

MILWAUKEE — Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) vowed to be former President Donald Trump’s “strongest ally” on Capitol Hill should he be reelected and pledged to implement his agenda.

In a speech during the third night of the Republican National Convention on Wednesday, Gaetz railed against the Biden administration on a slew of issues, claiming “America has fallen” over the last four years under the current president. Alternatively, Gaetz vowed to push for widespread changes in the federal government and Congress under a possible Trump administration.

“I’ll be President Trump’s strongest ally in Congress to pass term limits, to stop taxpayer funding for political campaigns, to ban members of Congress for life from becoming lobbyists,” Gaetz, who was greeted by huge cheers, said. “And for the same reason you don’t let the referee bet on the game, ban members of Congress from trading individual stocks.”

Gaetz especially hit on President Joe Biden over his age, which has emerged as a major concern not only among Republicans but also Democratic voters and lawmakers.

“I don’t think it’s too much to ask for the American president to be able to do the job,” Gaetz said.

Gaetz’s speech came just one day after he made headlines for interrupting a CNN interview with former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, whom Gaetz successfully ousted last October.

“What night are you speaking? Are you speaking tonight?” Gaetz said, taunting McCarthy, who is not expected to speak at the convention. “If you took that stage, you would get booed off of it.”

Gaetz was one of several House Republicans to hold a speaking slot during the high-profile nominating convention, especially as GOP leaders look to expand their historically small margin next year. His speech comes on the third day of the quadrennial convention, which bears the theme “Make America Strong Again,” focusing on the country’s foreign policy and international standing.
