LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Overcrowding is continuing to impact Louisville Metro Animals Services. To help with that, the agency is waiving adoption fees for all pets through July 31.

LMAS recently hosted one of their first free microchip clinics, where they microchipped 154 pets in Louisville. The clinic was held with hopes of reuniting pets faster with their owners, which would ultimately reduce and or eliminate time spent inside the shelter.

However, rising vet care costs, evictions, as well as lack of pet-friendly housing are still a problem for pet owners in the community. LMAS says they’ve taken in more than 200 pets in the past nine days, something the shelter says isn’t sustainable.

“Encouraging landlords to allow pets of any size of any breed, and asking pet owners to carry renter’s insurance, is a really good way to combat this issue and keep pets with their families,” Stephanie Foster with LMAS said.

If you’re not looking to adopt but still want to make a difference, there are ways to help. LMAS is asking people to share their social media posts and tell friends and family looking to adopt, that now might be the time.

They are also encouraging people to spay and neuter their pets. Even though fees are waived, adopters will still be required to go through the adoption process.
