About the Wheatbelt

The Wheatbelt is one of nine regions in Western Australia, boasting diverse landscapes from coastal waters to productive farmlands, gentle valleys, and rugged terrain.

The region’s economic foundation is strong, stable and varied, driven by diversification across the agriculture, mining, manufacturing, renewable energy and freight and logistics sectors.

Learn About Our Region

The Wheatbelt is Western Australia’s third most populous region, housing approximately 75,000 residents. It spans 154,862km2, encompassing over 200 towns and settlements across 42 local government areas.

Strategic Plan 2024-2026

The Wheatbelt Development Commission’s Strategic Plan for 2024-2026 charts a course towards sustainable growth and community prosperity across Western Australia’s Wheatbelt region.

The Strategic Plan has a strong focus on facilitating economic diversification, building environmental and economic resilience and advocating for enabling infrastructure.

Regional Economic Development Grants

The Regional Economic Development Grants (RED Grants) program is a State Government initiative that is investing in locally-driven projects to stimulate economic growth and development in regional Western Australia.

The RED Grants program is delivered locally by the Wheatbelt Development Commission, with support from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.

Acknowledgement of Country

The Wheatbelt Development Commission respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the lands that we live and work on: the family and clan groups of the Ballardong, Goreng, Gubrun, Kalamaia, Njaki-Njaki, Whadjuk, Wiilman, Wudjari, Yued and Yamatji People of the Noongar Nation, their Elders past present and emerging.

We acknowledge their living culture and important role in the sustainable economic development and prosperity of the Wheatbelt region. Led by Noongar wisdom and philosophy, we are committed to embracing opportunities for Aboriginal economic development, entrepreneurship and wealth creation; being a voice of change and reconciliation; supporting sustainable and healthy communities; and empowering future leaders.
