The Pandemic Fund

The Pandemic Fund

The Pandemic Fund is a multilateral financing mechanism dedicated to providing multiyear grants for enhancing pandemic preparedness in low- and middle-income countries. The Fund assists countries and regions in strengthening their health systems and increasing their investments, enabling them to prevent, prepare, and respond effectively to health threats.

The Fund also serves as an advocacy platform and enhances coordination among partners, fostering collaborative efforts to address global health challenges and build a healthier, safer, more resilient world.

WHO and the Pandemic Fund

Helping countries prepare

The WHO-awarded projects in the first-round of the Pandemic Fund span all six WHO regions, injecting vital resources to strengthen pandemic preparedness and response capabilities in critical areas like laboratories, surveillance, and health workforce development. These projects, expected to conclude in three years, are implemented in partnership with key entities like FAO, UNICEF, the World Bank, and the Inter-American Development Bank.

Governance

The Pandemic Fund is a collaborative partnership hosted by the World Bank with WHO as technical lead. The Fund is steered by a consortium of donor countries, potential implementing country governments, foundations, and civil society organizations. This diverse coalition is united in its commitment to preventing future pandemics.

Guiding the Fund’s strategic direction is a distinguished Governing Board. This Board benefits from the invaluable expertise of the Technical Advisory Panel, chaired by the WHO Executive Director for Health Emergencies. This Board of renowned experts provides critical advice on funding priorities and ensures the Fund's investments align with the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005) and other globally recognized legal frameworks, using the One Health approach.

The Pandemic Fund arrived at the right moment for Nepal. As the operational plan of the Pandemic Fund is based on the recent IHR-JEE recommendations, I am confident that Nepal will make significant measurable progress in the coming years to achieve health security through multisectoral collaboration, including the One Health approach.
