Improving surgical male circumcision practice – urethral fistula: diagnosis, first management and prevention

Übersicht

Based on reported cases of urethral fistula following procedures performed in HIV prevention through voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) programmes, WHO held a consultation to review, learn and respond to these rare but serious adverse events.  This improving practice technical brief provides information to improve surgical practice based on that review and clinical experts’ guidance.

This brief provides a description of urethral fistula, addresses the risk factors and potential practices that could lead to a fistula, diagnosis, first management and response, and prevention measures to reduce these complications through improved understanding by practitioners. It updates the 2019 version.
