OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The snowstorms in January, along with drastic temperature changes caused water damage in attics across the metro area.

Home inspector Greg Wayman with Foundation 2 Rooftop says the conditions created a perfect storm for homeowners.

During the first half of February 2024, he inspected several homes in a week and a-half.

“There were a lot of people that had stains in their ceiling show up in the last couple of weeks,” Wayman said.

He says damage ranges from simple water spots to dark stains from black mold. The weeks-long extreme cold caused frost to build up in attics. When temperatures rose, snow melted and dripped through ceilings.

Wayman says other signs of water damage include hot and stuffy attic air and the smell of mildew.

There is some good news, though.

“It’s not your roof leaking most likely,” Wayman said.

The problem is likely excess moisture that built up, according to Wayman.

“The humidifier is probably the number one cause,” he said. “The second cause is the lack of airflow, so for your soffit vents. Some of them are clogged, some houses don’t have enough ventilation and that moisture gets trapped.”

Wayman recommends attic inspections for anyone who suspects water damage. Homes might need to have extra insulation added or make other changes.
