Nebraska's secondary spent most of Tuesday's open portion of practice focusing on forcing turnovers, something the Huskers did only 14 times last year.

LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) - Huskers Head Coach Matt Rhule and offensive line coach Donovan Raiola spoke Thursday morning following Nebraska’s eighth spring practice. Here are the takeaways from their press conferences:

1. Wear and tear of spring practice

Going into today, Huskers head coach Matt Rhule was pleased with the health of the Huskers in the second week of spring practice. Coming out of Nebraska’s eighth practice Thursday morning, that wasn’t the case anymore.

“Today’s kinda like the line of demarcation,” said Rhule. “This is always sort of the day when really the wear and tear of camp starts to begin to affect you.”

Rhule said a couple players went down Thursday with what looks like soft tissue injuries. The only long-term injury Rhule mentioned was defensive lineman Leslie Black’s small fracture in his ankle that he had surgery on. Besides Black, Rhule says the injuries are all manageable.

2. AD Troy Dannen visits practice every day

Since Troy Dannen was announced as Nebraska’s new athletic director two weeks ago, the former Washington AD has been stopping by the Hawks Championship Center every day to watch practice. Having come from a school that just had its football team make it to the national championship, Rhule says Dannen understands his requests and doesn’t think they’re crazy.

“If maybe I come in and I say ‘hey we really need this,’ he has a perspective of ‘I know why we need this’,” said Rhule

3. Grant Brix progressing at offensive tackle

The number one recruit out of Iowa for the class of 2024 is already making big strides in Lincoln this spring. At six-foot-six, 285 pounds, Rhule has Brix slotted as an offensive tackle and believes that’s where the Logan-Magonlia product will shine.

“Grant [Brix] to me has a bright bright bright future at tackle. He can play tackle at this level,” said Rhule.

“He’s excited about this, his opportunity here and he’s growing every day,” said senior offensive lineman Bryce Benhart on Brix.

The Huskers will hold their annual Spring Game at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27, at Memorial Stadium.
