LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) - It’s officially game week as the Huskers prepare for Saturday’s spring game. Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield and running backs coach E.J. Barthel provided updates from Tuesday’s practice and previewed Saturday’s scrimmage.

1. Each quarterback will see reps with each group

This shouldn’t come as any surprise. Matt Rhule said Saturday that he intends to keep the quarterback race running into the fall. Satterfield followed that up Tuesday adding that each quarterback will see time with each group on the depth chart. Satterfield’s goal for the game? Ball security.

“What I want to see is them taking care of the football. Securing the snap, taking care of the football, throwing it away when needed. Just making sure that we have the ball of every whistle.”

2. Offense improving at turnover prevention

Satterfield was asked how his offense is progressing with ball security. His answer was short and to the point.

“I don’t even want you to ask me stuff like that,” he said jokingly. “We’ve improved.”

Satterfield then knocked on the podium for several seconds before adding:

“There’s not enough wood to knock on. We’ve improved.”

3. Importance of RB depth

Gabe Ervin Jr. and Rahmir Johnson both went down with season-ending injuries after the Huskers Sept. 16 win over Northern Illinois. After losing his top two running backs so early in the season, Berthal emphasized the importance of having his entire room ready should they be called upon.

“When I was a younger coach, you think of your ones and twos as your most important,” he said. “But I look at it now as the young guys are going to push the whole room. The other thing is they’re going to be ready to play if they need to play.”
