OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Millard West shortstop Tyson Lewis commands the spotlight—and for good reason.

“He’s been one of the best that’s come through since I’ve been here,” head coach Steve Frey said.

The Millard West senior is hitting .526 with six homers, and a state-leading 44 runs scored. He’s also tied for third in the state with 34 RBI despite batting leadoff.

“When he gets up to bat, you’re thinking he might have a double, triple, or home run,” Frey said. “That gets the rest of our guys going.”

“Being the leadoff guy, you’re definitely set the tone for the game,” Lewis said. “Getting on base, putting a ball in the gap, that’s huge for the team and huge for the energy in the dugout.”

Lewis committed to Arkansas ahead of his junior campaign. He quickly fell in love with the coaching staff and Razorback Nation.

“Getting down there on campus and seeing their facilities and the whole town of Fayetteville—it’s  crazy down there,” he said. “They just love ball and I was just super excited to be a part of that.”

But Tyson will have a decision to make. Projected to be a late first round—or supplemental round—selection in July’s MLB Draft, Lewis could become one of the highest high school picks ever to come out of Nebraska. For now, he is focused on enjoying his senior year of high school.

“You’ve just got to stay where your feet are,” he said. “Those things are out of our control. I don’t really have a say in that. Just do what I can do to help the team win and I think all those other things will take care of themselves.”
