OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Year One for Gretna East baseball couldn’t be going much better.

“These guys just kept believing,” head coach Darrell Everhart said. “We kept telling them to trust the process and here we are.”

The Griffins clinched a state tournament berth in their inaugural season without a senior on the roster.

“People are probably thinking ‘These guys don’t have seniors, it’s going to be tough for them to make state,’ but we had our own expectations,” junior right-handed pitcher Trevor Cox said. “This is our goal.”

Cox turned in a terrific pitching performance in the district final win over North Platte, hurling six innings of one-run ball while striking out nine.

“The adrenaline is rushing in a district final game,” he said. “I’ve got a great defense behind me so it makes it 10 times easier to just throw and trust my stuff.

“When you have a go-to game, you want a person to be in charge of that and that’s Trevor,” Everhart said. “He’s been gifted and he wants to be in that position. We trust him to take that on, and the guys feed off of him. He did a fabulous job.”

But the job is not done—Gretna East will start their state tournament run Saturday morning against Plattsmouth.

“We have the pitching,” Cox said. “We’re going to create chaos on the basepaths and we’re going to put the pressure on the other team.”

“Anyone that wants to watch some really fun baseball, you’ve got to watch the Griffins play,” Everhart added. “They play with all heart, they leave it all on the field. Just young guys having a great time.”
