Omaha aims to annex property around new Costco location

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The city is proposing annexing property around the new Costco, set to open next month in Northwest Omaha.

The 32 acres of property — consisting of has an estimated value of $7.7 million with a 10-year cost/revenue projections at $14.4 million.

Located just outside the city limits in an area referenced as “Whispering Ridge West,” the land consists of six lots and two outlots. No one currently resides within the property.

The ordinance gets its first reading at City Council on Tuesday; it’s listed as item No. 71. The public hearing is set for the June 25 council meeting. If approved, which could happen as early as July 16, the ordinance would go into effect 15 days later.

Earlier this week, the Douglas County Commissioners approved plans to add more traffic signs in the area.

The new store has been in the works since plans were approved by the Omaha City Council in October 2022.

OTHER AGENDA ITEMS

Also on the agenda for next week’s City Council meeting:

  • Four Lucy’s locations are applying for liquor licenses. The establishments have areas for a bar and gaming. One of the locations is also submitting an application for a liquor license for a business called “Bottles & Brews.”
  • A resolution to accept a settlement with M.U.D. for $12.1 million — with $1.1 million coming from the City of Omaha — over a case seeking “injunctive relief and damages” for construction around the Saddle Creek Retention Treatment Basin. The utility had filed a lawsuit alleging that “dewatering operations” that occurred after the basin was built “critically impacted” M.U.D. gas and water lines in that area. The settlement comes after six mediations, according to the Omaha Law Departmet memo.
  • First reading of an ordinance to aquire private property needed for the Omaha Streetcar. If negotiations with the property owners fail, the city can condemn the property.
  • First reading of a TIF request to redevelop a building, located at 1127 N. 20th St., into a community kitchen and dietary call center for CHI.
  • First reading on an amendment on the collective bargaining agreement with the Omaha Police that would allow OPD captains to be eligible for 3% specialty pay.
