6 FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY: Storms likely by late afternoon Tuesday
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Tuesday is a 6 First Alert Weather Day as widespread thunderstorms are expected to develop along a front moving in from northwest and crossing the metro during the afternoon and evening hours, affecting any outdoor activities. A few stronger storms are possible, with heavy rainfall likely.
The cold front will be pushing through central Nebraska during the morning hours, reaching a line from Grand Island to Norfolk to Sioux City by around 1pm. An isolated shower or storm is possible ahead of the front through early afternoon, but any rain would be brief and most areas will stay dry. Thunderstorms are expected to begin to develop along the front by 3pm, forming a solid line of storms along the front by 4pm. There will be at least an isolated risk for a couple of strong to severe storms along and head of the front. The main severe risks would be some hail up to 1″ and a few stronger wind gusts. Widespread severe weather is not expected at this time.
The storms likely reach areas around Seward to David City, Columbus, and West point by 4pm, and push toward the Omaha metro and Lincoln areas between 5 and 7pm. A few stronger wind gusts are possible as the storms push into the metro, but the biggest risk will come from frequent lightning and torrential rainfall. The storms are expected to be slow moving, which could allow for 1 to 3 inches of rainfall to accumulate in a short period of time. This will result in at least an isolated risk for flash flooding, especially in areas that have seen recent rounds of heavy rainfall in the last few days.
Once storms move in, it may take some time for storms to move out. At least scattered to numerous storms are likely through at least 10pm. If you are planning on attending the CWS Tuesday, expect to have weather delays. The afternoon game may be able to wrap up on time, but with storms coming in for the evening, the second game will likely experience delays. With the slow movement of the storms, it may be difficult to get the game in. Any other outdoor activities should have backup plans for the evening as well, make sure to have somewhere indoors to take shelter from the heavy rain and lightning threat.
In addition to the storm risk, gusty south winds are expected once again. South winds of 10 to 20mph with gusts to 30mph can be expected ahead of the storms. Some stronger gusts are possible with the storms as well.
