OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The Nebraska Board of Regents approved a budget for 2024-2025 for the University of Nebraska system.

It was a 7-2 vote on Thursday, as the board approved a $1 billion budget, which includes a tuition increase and spending cuts.

For the tuition increase, if a student is taking 15 credit hours, they’ll pay $135 dollars more per semester at UNL. At UNO, that increase is $120, and for UNK students, it’s $105.

In addition to the tuition changes, the budget also includes $11.5 million in permanent spending cuts across all campuses to help account for a $17 million budget shortfall.

“I think at the end of the day while it will be challenging, I think we all agree this is manageable amount and the chancellors are willing to roll up their sleeves work through their shared governors processes and find the right solutions in terms of our spending for next year,” said Chris Kabourek with the Nebraska Board of Regents.

This budget also lets the board invest in another $1.5 million to expand the new president’s scholars program. It provides a full scholarship plus a $5,000 stipend to Nebraska students who score a perfect 36 on the ACT.

It also makes $1.5 million available for university president-elect Dr. Jeffrey Gold to invest in the priorities of his choosing. Dr. Gold assumes his new role July 1.
