OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Downtown Omaha figures to serve as the host of a major celebration Monday night.

Either No. 1 Tennessee (59-13) or No. 3 Texas A&M (53-14) will hoist the national championship trophy for the first time ever after a deciding Game 3 set to take place at 6 p.m. Monday night at Charles Schwab Field in the finals of the 2024 Men’s College World Series.

Texas A&M appeared to be on the doorstep of clinching that coveted prize just 24 hours ago, but now finds itself lacing up the cleats one more time. The Aggies blitzed Tennessee in the opening game of the series, fending off a late comeback to earn a 9-5 victory Friday night.

That momentum seemed to have rolled into Sunday, as Texas A&M took a 1-0 lead into the late stages of Game 2 with a pitching staff that had shown no signs of slowing down. Unfortunately for Aggies fans, they did.

Tennessee posted two runs in the top of the seventh and two in the eighth thanks to a pair of homers from Dylan Dreiling and Cal Stark. It was enough for the Volunteers to come away with a 4-1 win, forcing a third and final game to decide this year’s CWS champion.

Both squads entered the championship series unbeaten in the College World Series. Tennessee squeaked out a 12-11 thriller over Florida State in the opening matchup last week before cruising to a 6-1 win over North Carolina and downing the Seminoles again in the semifinals, 7-2.

The Aggies knocked off Florida 3-2 in their first game, followed by a 5-1 win over Kentucky and another victory over Florida in the semifinals — this time, a 6-0 shutout.
