KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine (WMTW) – A lottery for a three-bedroom house in Maine, priced at just a fraction of its market value, fell flat.

Only six people applied for the chance to call it home, and of those, only half of the applicants met the eligibility requirements.

The lottery winner was randomly chosen from those three.

The discounted home was listed at $326,000 – just a fraction of what most homes cost in Kennebunkport, where the average home is valued at $1.12 million.

The lottery was offered through a program run by Kennebunkport Heritage Housing Trust, which offers affordable homes to working families and seniors.

Kennebunkport Heritage Housing Trust Executive Director Larissa Crockett said she was expecting between 20 to 80 applications.

“We know that there was interest. We know that there were lots of people learning more about it. What we don’t understand is why fewer people applied than we were truly expecting,” Crockett said.

As Kennebunkport Heritage Housing Trust works to add more affordable homes, Crockett is going to work with her team to try to figure out why more people didn’t apply for this opening.

Another Kennebunkport Heritage Housing Trust homeowner, who lives right behind the lottery home, said she was surprised only six people applied. However, she noted that for a lot of people, $326,000 for a house is still out of reach.
