OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Construction is underway on Habitat for Humanity’s largest project ever in Council Bluffs.

Inch by inch, construction crews piece together the milestone development.

“It’s the biggest one-time development that we’ve done. We’ve done as many homes in a given year; but this — in one site — is the most homes we’ve built in a single development,” Executive Director Blake Johnson told 6 News.

The corner of First Avenue and South Eighth Street will soon become “Baldwin Court,” a townhome development designed for low-income families.

“This specific location in Council Bluffs has been an unactive corner for a few years that has been needing some investment and development, and we’re proud to bring the six townhomes to this corner,” Johnson said.

Like most U.S. cities, he said, Council Bluffs is in dire need of affordable housing.

He says the project was made possible by a grant from the Iowa Finance Authority.

“It’s exciting. It’s transformational. Not only for Habitat for Humanity to receive the funding to be able to pull off a development like this, but for this community in general in Council Bluffs that needs affordable housing,” Johnson said.

Turner Morgan of Council Bluffs agrees.

“It’s in every neighborhood. I’ve worked with many neighborhoods around Council Bluffs, and I have friends looking for homes. So, any chance where this is potential to build, potential to remodel, we need to take advantage and make quality, affordable housing,” Morgan said.

Each townhome will have four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a single-car garage.

The development is part of habitat’s goal to empower families by providing opportunities for home ownership.

“It’s nice to see a vacant lot turned into housing that we desperately need and create some more density downtown,” Morgan said.

The development is expected to be completed in December.
