OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Very hot and humid conditions returned to the area Monday afternoon with temperatures climbing into the mid-90s. Thanks to very high humidity, the heat index, or feels like temperature, pushed into the 105 to 110 degree range for the metro, and for areas south of I-80. A cold front is moving through, but will have little impact on our temperatures until later tonight meaning the hot and humid conditions will stick around for the evening. Expect heat index readings of 100 to 110 degrees through at least 8 or 9pm.

A spotty storm or two is possible with the cold front, however the better chances for storms will to the east of the Omaha metro. A storm or two may fire up just east of the Missouri River, especially near and east of Denison to Harlan and Atlantic south to Red Oak. Those storms will then grow in coverage and strength as they move east, taking the severe risk with them. The highest risk will likely be over mainly over central Iowa and then east toward Chicago where a round of significant severe weather is possible. A few storms are possible in western Nebraska as well, but the rain chances for Omaha, Lincoln, and surrounding areas is on the low side for this evening.

Slightly cooler and less humid air will filter in overnight, allowing temperatures to drop off into the mid and upper 60s by morning. More clouds are expected on Tuesday along with a northwest breeze. That will help to keep us 5 to 10 degree cooler than the past few days. Afternoon highs should top out in the mid-80s, around 85 degrees for the Omaha metro.

Some spotty storms are possible in the afternoon and evening as a secondary cold front moves through the area Tuesday afternoon and evening. Rain is not expected to be widespread, but a couple of spotty downpours are possible. A strong storm or two can’t be ruled out, especially to the west of Omaha over central Nebraska.

After Tuesday’s rain chance, generally dry weather is expected for the rest of the week. It will be more comfortable as well, as high temperatures fall into the low and mi-80s through at least the upcoming weekend. Our next chance for rain enters the forecast late Friday into the weekend, with scattered showers or storms possible for both Saturday and Sunday. The rain will help to keep the mild temperatures around into early next week.
