LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - A new state statute prohibiting right and left turns on red arrow signals will take effect on Friday.

Lincoln Transportation and Utilities said this change aims to enhance safety for all road users, including drivers and pedestrians.

“We urge all drivers to familiarize themselves with this new law and comply with it to enhance the safety of our roadways,” Assistant Director of Transportation Thomas Shafer said. “The prohibition of turns on red arrows is a crucial step in protecting drivers and pedestrians at busy intersections.”

Under Nebraska Revised Statute 60-6,123, drivers facing a steady red arrow must come to a complete stop at the intersection before entering a crosswalk or stop line. The new law mandates that drivers remain fully stopped until a green or yellow arrow signal is displayed.

This update is part of ongoing efforts to improve street safety and reduce crashes at intersections, according to LTU.
