Police identify swimmer who drowned in private lake in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Neb. (KOLN) - The Norfolk Police Division identified the swimmer who drowned in a private lake in Norfolk as 29-year-old Erick Ponce Herrera.

On July 14, Norfolk Fire and Rescue and Norfolk Police responded to a report of a male swimmer who went missing in a private lake near Highway 81 and North Airport Road just after 5:50 p.m.

According to three witnesses, the man had been swimming in the lake, went under water and did not resurface. Norfolk Rescue then activated its water rescue team.

Police said the body of the male swimmer was recovered from the water around 7:15 p.m.

Madison County Sheriff’s Office, the Battle Creek Fire & Rescue and Hadar Fire & Rescue provided mutual aid in Norfolk during the search and recovery operation.
