OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - With a month to go before their season opener, Huskers football held a pre camp media day Tuesday.

Matt Rhule said he is looking forward to the leaps his squad will make over the next four-plus weeks.

“I love this time of year,” he said. “Don’t get me wrong, I love the games, but watching these guys grow, develop, overcome adversity, it’s fun.”

Rhule revealed that six players will not enter camp on the 120-man roster due to injuries: Kicker Tristan Alvano, DB Blye Hill, FB Barret Liebentritt, RB Maurice Mazzccua, DL Brodie Tagaloa and LB Michael Booker III. The most surprising revelation was the injury to Alvano, who started last season as a freshman. Rhule indicated the move was out of an abundance of caution.

“We know what we have in Tristan, so better not to rush it,” he said. “Get him healthy.”

“The timing of it was actually good,” special teams coordinator Ed Foley added. “Obviously I’d like him to be kicking right now. But if he had come into the training room this week or last week that would be a concern. It’s something we’ve been dealing with and working on since early June.”

The Huskers defense was the shining phase of the 2023 campaign, but Rhule is challenging them to take the ball away at a higher rate this fall.

“We have to take the ball away 20 times this year,” he said.

Marcus Satterfield, offensive coordinator, touted the depth at receiver and offensive line. The sophomore class is coming in with plenty of game reps due to injuries last year.

“I’ve never had this depth and experience. It’s a good problem to have,” he said. “It’s a superpower for us.”
