No. 2 Nebraska opens volleyball season with win over No. 9 Kentucky in Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Kent. (WOWT) - No. 2 Nebraska opened the college volleyball season with a four-set win over No. 9 Kentucky at the AVCA First Serve Showcase in Louisville, Kent. (25-21, 22-25, 25-15, 25-20).
The Huskers hit .258 in the victory while holding the Wildcats to .139. Merritt Beason and Rebekah Allick led the way for Nebraska with 11 kills apiece.
Kentucky jumped out to a 15-11 edge in the first set before senior Lindsay Krause sparked the comeback. Making her first start since last October, the Skutt Catholic alum provided back-to-back kills to give Nebraska a 20-19 advantage, their first lead since 3-1. Krause also delivered the set point to Nebraska, 25-21.
Nebraska didn’t have an answer for Kentucky in the second set. The Huskers were held to just a .054 clip as the Wildcats took the frame, 25-22.
The slump was short lived. Nebraska played inspired defense, holding the Wildcats to a stagnant .000 hitting percentage en route to a dominant set three victory, 25-15.
Back-to-back blocks by Allick put the Huskers in front 5-1 to start set four. From that point on, Kentucky never came within three points. Allick delivered the match point kill, 25-20.
Nebraska returns to Lincoln for their home opener. The Huskers host Texas A&M Corpus Christi Friday at 7:00pm.
