All about the 2024 Olympic gymnastics uniform

This year's U.S. Olympic Women's Gymnastics uniforms — or leotards as they are often called — were designed by GK Elite. There are eight in total, one of which — the Go For Glory — will be worn during the team competition, and the remaining leotards will be worn during the other individual events.

"They're really evening-wear looks," explained the design director of GK Elite, Jeanne Diaz, to The New York Times. "We wanted to lean into that hard for Paris, the fashion capital of the world. So we utilized a lot of high fashion elements, looked at a lot of corsetry, at Art Nouveau architecture, at old Hollywood glamour of the 1920s."

She added to that, saying, "I hope the athletes feel confident and proud to represent Team USA. The leotards were meant to evoke that feeling of when an athlete wins a medal and receives an American flag and drapes it around themselves; I hope that viewers and the athletes feel that emotion."

The uniforms were first debuted on GK Elite's Instagram, with them writing, "JUST DROPPED: 2024 NATIONAL TEAM APPAREL AND REPLICAS 🇺🇸 For the first time EVER we introduce you to the USA Team replicas BEFORE the team hits the world stage in Paris 🗼🇫🇷

The shocking record the Olympic women’s gymnastic uniform broke

Aside from being the first uniforms announced before the Games, this year's leotards also broke an Olympic record — the most crystals ever used on an Olympic uniform.

"The more crystals, the more impact, the more the leotards are talked about," explained Diaz.

She also noted that the use of crystals on the uniform "can accentuate the routine of the gymnasts."

This year's uniforms feature over 10,000 Swarovski crystals, a big jump from the 6,400 the athletes wore in the last Olympic Games. It is also the first time pearls have been used on the leotards – more than 1,000 pearls were placed, all by hand.

The idea for the sparkling upgrade came from the chief executive of GK Elite, Matt Cowan, who told The New York Times that, "Everybody looks to Team U.S.A. and says, 'I want to look like that — I want to sparkle like that. [So GK is constantly asking] How can we get more crystals on there? How can we introduce that sparkle and sheen in a new way?"

However, despite the intricate design, Diaz assured supporters of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team that, "First and foremost, it is a performance garment; we have to think about their comfort and movement. It moves with the body so that their mind isn't on what they're wearing."

Who will wear the 2024 Olympic gymnastics uniform?

The 2024 women's Olympic gymnastics uniforms will be worn by Simone Biles, Sunisa Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera.

Lee in particular is excited for the crystals on the uniform, telling The New York Times of the ensembles, "I am obsessed with how the lights of the arena reflect off the crystals. I am always telling GK I need more."
