It’s no secret that John F. Kennedy Jr.’s marriage to Carolyn Bessette wasn’t a fairytale. The couple was often spotted in public, fighting their battles in front of the paparazzi even though the tabloids were often the source of their issues. There were also rumors of infidelity on both sides with allegations that they ran into the arms of an ex. Well, one of JFK. Jr’s ex-girlfriend, Julie Baker, is clearing the air in a new book, JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography.

The book will be available on July 16, the 25th anniversary of his death after the plane he was piloting crashed off the shoreline of Martha’s Vineyard, and Baker wants to make sure her name is not associated with anything negative about her ex-boyfriend. She met him in 1989 while he was dating Christina Haag. They had their first date at an Andrew Dice Clay concert in 1990 and stayed together for about two years. After their romance, Baker insisted that they stayed firmly in the friend zone, but some of JFK Jr.’s pals still question her remarks.

In an excerpt of the book obtained by People, Sasha Chermayeff, a friend of JFK Jr.’s from his time at Phillips Andover, said that he and Bessette were often “spiting each other” and “maybe Carolyn was trying to make him worry [by not coming home].” That’s when JFK Jr. allegedly turned the tables on his wife. “So, then he did it the next night. He was not with her those last two nights. The Stanhope thing was tricky. I think he went there to meet [former girlfriend] Julie Baker,” Chermayeff claimed. “Everybody always asks me, ‘What do I think would’ve happened?’ Anything was possible.”

Baker has a much different timeline than Chermayeff, noting that she “spoke to John for the last time the night before he passed” — she didn’t see him in person. “There is a rumor going around that I was with him at the Stanhope [that night]. This is not true. He was at a baseball game and wanted me to meet up with him and his friend after to grab a drink,” she shared. “I was away, so I couldn’t. I did however grab a quick lunch with him (which we often did) at the Stanhope a few days before the accident.”

Elizabeth Beller’s book, Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, seemed to downplay Bessette’s affair allegations as well, pointing out that her older sister, Lauren, was the one she ran to when times were tough. She lived only a few blocks away and her sibling’s apartment offered the privacy that she needed. Beller wrote in her book, “The message seemed to be: I still have my own life. Take me for granted, and I won’t be there.”

Sadly, both JFK Jr. and Bessette didn’t get that opportunity to work out their differences, and friends and family members are the ones who are telling their version of the couple’s events.
