Triple digit heat with a few weekend storms

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Our first weekend of August will feature a whole lot of heat with a side of afternoon storms.

NEW BLOG: New tropical system may be brewing soon in the Gulf of Mexico

We finish off the work week with hot, dry and humid conditions. Today’s afternoon highs will run 97°-102° with heat index values up to 108°. Morning clouds will quickly clear to allow plenty of sun to shine through the day.

Weekend forecast

Our dominant ridge of high pressure will shift northwest over the weekend, allowing a few showers and storms to push into the area Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Rain chances look best for those in North Texas, but a boundary sinking south will be the focus for storms in our northern counties & Hill Country on Saturday and in the central (Austin-metro) & southern counties on Sunday.

Most of us will not see rain but those who do could pick up a quick 0.1″-0.5″.

Next week

Rain chances shut down again by Monday leaving us with a hot, dry and sunny start to our next work week. Climatologically, our hottest time of the year in Austin is July 31st through August 14th. We’ll be at or above average for most of that period.
