How warm or shall I ask how cold is the patio dining? Weather will be in the mid 30's I didn't realize I booked a patio res but been dying to go here so it is what it is, trying to plan ahead!
A:
The patio area has heaters, and I can't imagine that the restaurant would seat people outside unless it were comfortable. I wouldn't worry. The deviled eggs are great as an appetizer, but avoid the strange,… more

I went here with my family last night. It has a beautiful atmosphere! We had reservations for patio seating. It was very busy this day so we weren't seated until after 10 minutes of our reservation time. Sitting outside was nice. There was heating outside and music. It was very comfortable. As long as you're not afraid of bugs i would recommend sitting outside. Indoor seating was also very cozy.
The service was neither good nor bad. Mostly seemed like the servers had a long day since our reservation was towards the end of the night.
The food absolutely delicious! It was exactly what i expected for the price i paid (for the most part). I ordered the Po Mi which is a mix of a po boy and a vietnamese banh mi. it was a perfectly balanced sandwich but for soul food i expected a bit more flavor. The mac and cheese was absolutely perfect and so were the collard greens. But the best thing on the table was the shrimp toast. I can't even explain how delicious it was. You just have to try it for yourself :)Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0 - Aug 24, 2024Updated review
Had a wonderful with friends a few weeks ago. Been a couple years since I've dined a Communion. Don't know why I waited so long. We had previous plans and were lucky to nab a reservation day of for five of us. One of the five was their first time. The service has always been friendly every time I have visited and is still the same genuinely feel welcomed.
We ordered a number of dishes and enjoyed to share. one of our friend can't have spicy food for medical reasons and our server was helpful at guiding us through the menu to items she could enjoy. What we had That Brown Girl Cooks's famous Black Eyed Pea Hummus, Shrimp Toast, #Hoodsushi,BBQ Shrimp, Sautéed Clams, Neck-bone Stew
Collard Green and Sweet Potato Hoe Cakes, Grilled Okra, Pork Chop
And Stuffed Trout. All the dishes were delicious and some I and before but my favorite was the trout.
Have always loved the decor here it's a beautiful space, welcoming and comfortable.Helpful 3Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0Jun 9, 2022Previous reviewFinally was able to grab a reservation for dinner I knew after my brunch last a few months ago we were in for a treat. I luckily I work 6am-3pm my guess is not to many people want a reservation at 4pm there were a couple walk ins lined up may try that route next time. One thing I've enjoyed on both visits is the service. Everyone from the host to server are so friendly each dish is explained when set on the table.
I brought my friend Kathy with me to enjoy the experience. The food as my friend stated are unique delicious flavors no dish tastes the same. We shared a few plates and had our own individual bottled cocktails. What we enjoyed on this visit: -special entree of the evening half fried eggplant with crab and prawns, TBGC! Relish Tray, Hey Auntie Bottled Cocktails and Unc's Fried Chicken Wings. I had heard great things about the black eyed pea hummus from a friend, the relish tray was definitely one of my favorites each homemade dip was so different from each other. The pickled veggies were delicious as well as the buttery hoe cakes that cone with the dish. The wings came out piping hot and crispy, great flavor perfectly seasoned. The entree special of fried eggplant with prawns and chunks of crab in a gumbo like sauce was cooked to perfection the eggplant was firm still but toothsome and not mushy, the prawns were succulent.
The Hey Auntie is my kind of cockatoo I lean towards more tart cocktails and this hit the spot! Looking forward to enjoying another wonderful meal here.Apr 10, 2022Previous reviewSo glad I finally got to visit Communion it is definitely living up to all the excitement in my opinion. Thanks to fellow Yelp Elite Marie B for suggesting getting in line early for brunch, We got in line about 10:30 and made it in. We got seated inside which was nice was worried we would be outside and not be able to see the interior.
The hostess to server were all friendly and welcoming. Love the aesthetics the pressed copper colored tin ceiling tiles and wall color..
Every dish was memorable I'll be talking about this meal for a long time. We came for the Laos Sausage Benedict and boy did they deliver. Bit of a kick and you could definitely taste the lemon grass what wonderful take in a Benedict. Love the crispy bits of texture. The salad itself was a meal with squash, lentils and pickled onions a generous portion and nice break of freshness to the richness of the benedict. I know we had eggs but we'll just say there is a reason we saw plate after plate of deviled eggs flying out of the kitchen. All three were delicious but I think the smoked oyster may have been our favorite.
Need to work on returning for dinner cause I can only imagine how good the rest if the menu and cocktails are! Definitely looking forward to visiting again and sitting at the bar! - Jiayang L.Seattle, WA11018Sep 12, 2024
Made reservations at 6, Waited 15-20 min after host sat us down and no one ever came ask us anything, had to flag someone down to order.
There was a 20 min wait between we got our collars green and next dish, we were just sitting there.
Wings: good flavor and juicy, would recommend
Collard greens plate: mid, feel everything on the plates are just side, wouldn't recommend
Stew: good, meat fall off the bone, delicious
Mac and cheese: nothing really special it was what ever
Bread pudding: pretty goodHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 20, 2024
Black WOMAN Owned!!! The PNW has been blessed with the grace, talent, and remarkable skill of the Amazing Chef Kristi!
Everything was well seasoned and flavorful! Portions were satisfying and I shared and even had leftovers. Get the cornbread!!! Try EVERY cocktail, especially the mason jar ones!
Love the concept of the open kitchen as well as the smaller dining area. Just the right size for a personable experience. Staff works well together to address the needs of every table.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 20, 2024
Everything we ate here was absolutely amazing. Almost everything we ate here was also spicy. For most of our party the spice level was fine. There weren't too many left overs because no one wanted to stop eating!
First things first. Go to their website to make reservations. They open reservations at the beginning of the month and when they are gone, they are gone. You must make reservations or expect to be turned away. Now you know. There is bar seating that may be available. We did have to wait a bit past our reservation time for the table to empty. The party were having a good time and altough they were given the bill, they partied on a bit longer. It was graduation day at UofW so we weren't too bothered. That's why we were there too!
The table was a long, group sized table. Another small party was at one end, our party of five at the other. So just be aware, you may be sharing space. This type of dining is not new to us, so we were good with the arrangement and it's good to know they can accommodate large groups. With a full house, dining inside was loud and a little hard to hear the waiter. There are also a few tables outside on the sidewalk you can reserve.
Not only is the food delicious, the presentation is well done. We shared some vegetable fritters in curry sauce. Everyone enjoyed them especially with the curry sauce. It really set the fritters over the top. Unc's chicken was definitely a favorite. You should try them if you can tolerate the spice. Mac & cheese is a very satisfying dish. Just what you want in a creamy, home cooked mac & cheese. The collards are delicious. These are a little spicy and just so darn good. If you haven't tried collards, try these.
I went with their winter squash dinner. It was a very tasty dish with quinoa and cranberry and filled me nicely with the side of collards. The cat fish po'boy was a filling, tasty, spicy treat. That Berbere chicken is hot spicy. Not just spicy, hot spicy. Take note. The menu changes seasonally so check the website for the latest menu.
The chef has been nominated for a James Beard award and although she did not win this year, just the nomination speaks to the level of delicious you can expect at Communion. If you will be visiting or live nearby I truly do recommend you check out this restaurant. They have a full bar, beer and wine besides soft drinks. Parking is on street. Restrooms down a hall to the side of the open kitchen.
Bon apetite.Helpful 5Thanks 1Love this 10Oh no 0 - May 28, 2024
My friends wanted to go here for dinner so we decided to go one weekend. It looks like it's hard to get reservation, but luckily we were able to book an outdoor seating the day before. We actually ended up being late 30 min and our reservation was cancelled (they have 15 min grace period), but they managed to get us on the top of the waitlist and was still able to be seated after like 15 min of waiting. Nice! Servers were chill and friendly. I like the vibe here and the outdoor seating had a big heater so I was actually running hot most of the time - definitely better than being cold.
The food offered here felt original and I appreciate that they care about what they are making. I like fish so I enjoyed the stuffed trout a lot. On the other hand, I thought most of the dish here are too salty and wish they used less salt - this is coming from someone who likes food on saltier side, so I think the seasoning was really a bit much. The drinks were strong and I was hitting the ceiling 20 minutes into drinking (I'm very lightweight) so anyone with low tolerance should proceed with caution. The place was fully booked that day but we still got to hang for like two hours, which was nice.Helpful 3Thanks 1Love this 5Oh no 0 - Jun 1, 2024
I really was excited to try this place while in town it's black owned and seems to be in a nice part of the city
Of fortunately the menu was very under whelming. If I come back to town I would give them a second chance. Service was very good and welcoming . Their music Playlist was nice & there is a full bar
The neck bone stew was soo salty I tried adding lemon to cut the salt .. it seemed as if someone accidently spilled salt into the pot.. the cabbage & clam dish was good strong 3/5 . If I am remembering correctly the cabbage is served in a little broth and it was flavorful. But not good when it got cold.
There is ample seating in door & outHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 10, 2024
Great experience overall! You most likely need to reserve a couple of weeks in advance to get the best time, so be prepared for that.
Service was really friendly and welcoming--definitely a highlight. I was impressed by the food but not blown away. Still definitely worth trying! The wings were definitely the best.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Apr 7, 2024
I had such a delicious and unique meal here! They were unfortunately out of the neckbone stew. My favorites were the shrimp toast, sweet potato hoe cakes, and the short rib. The shrimp toast was surprising for me and the shrimp was baked into the bread. The hoe cakes were buttery and light, and the short rib came with congee and the meat was very tender and fell right off the bone. The hood sushi, mac and cheese, clams, Laotian scotch egg, and po mi were okay but solid - nothing too exciting but the fish in the po mi was cooked perfectly. Four of us shared seven dishes and we were all full and satisfied after everything.
The food was all served very quickly and service was attentive. They did ask us to leave after around 90 minutes to allow other guests to use our table. A lot of the southern food had Asian influences which I did not expect. I'll be back!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Karie W.Lacey, WA1106Aug 11, 2024
We went here on a whim, and we were greeted with the warmest welcome! Everyone we encountered was very friendly. What a fun atmosphere. It's a whole vibe! The nostalgic music that I grew up listening to. Very soulful R&B. It really set the tone and felt like home in a way. We wanted to order the whole menu, but had some deciding to do.
We started with the bottled cocktails. My honey got the Brown Liquor, that will warm you up, and I got the Hey Auntie, very refreshing! The were both so good.
We ordered The Hood Sushi Roll, a sushi roll with fried catfish. It's unique and so flavorful. It's a must because you won't find anything like it anywhere else.
Then we got the Bebere Chicken, this was probably my favorite dish if I had to choose one. It was full of Ethiopian flavors and the Lentils compliment the chicken so well.
Mmmm...the Neckbone Stew. So flavorful. If this and the Mac & Cheese isn't comfort food, then what are you even doing? It was soo sooo good!! I'm GF, but I had to taste the Mac n Cheese. I did and it was dangerously addicting.
The greens deserve a very special shout out. Everyone in my life has made greens so differently. They are very personal to the individual making them. These are hands down the best I have ever had! Such a great balance of flavors, and you can taste the love put into them.
Lastly, the GF brownie!!! I was so happy I could eat dessert here. It's a winner! It's the best brownie I have ever had in my life. Topped with salted Carmel ice cream. Do not sleep on this.
Needless to say, we will be back and try the other half of the menu!
A little side note, we discovered this restaurant when Chef Kristi and her team came out to our brother's farm to watch the processing of chickens that she was getting for her restaurant. My honey was a part of that and he came home saying nothing but the best things about Chef and her team.
Thanks to Chef Kristi and your wonderful team!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
