Nice tour! We have seen a lot of Frank Lloyd Wright homes from the outside, like in Oak Park, Park forest, etc. 1st time in one however. Place was huge, 12,000 sq ft. Some weird rich chick who liked to blow thru money like a drunken sailor was the cheif inhabitant. And FLW was Nazi like in what he would "allow" in the home, like no personal pictures. Huh? If You buy the house, take a hike, FLW.
The tour was very informative, many changes in ceiling height, lots of period furniture, and dim lighting, which was what they had in 1904 when the house was completed. A very cool house, but I could never live there. I'm 6-2 and FLW felt if you were taller than 5-7, his height?, F U and watch out for hitting your head when you venture from one room to another.
1st electrified home either in the area or country, something like that...
Didn't know FLW designed furniture, well he did, and there are lots of it in this house. Former Gov Jim Thomson bought some original lamps to return to this place, way to go Jim. Something like $750k for an ugly FLW lamp, but hey, it's an original FLW that was in this house...
Cool tour, informative, free but donation suggested of $10/head, which is entirely worth it, and I'm a cheap guy at heart and we paid it.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Joe S.Springfield, IL016Jun 16, 2017
Its not all Lincoln in Springfield this house is amazing and I can't say much more than all the other reviews have except that if your even mildly interested in architecture this is a must see in Springfield the original furniture and glass ornaments are just beautiful. This is one site that even tho I live here i revisit all the time.

The Dana Thomas House is truly one of FLW's gems! I have toured the home several times and each time I appreciate something new. Borrowing Lisa C's comment, the property is absolutely stunning. The intricate details are baffling; the house is absolutely sexy, if you can call a house that. I wish the tours were longer and toured all rooms, but going more than once (with different guides) leads to different tours with much different narration. The Dana Thomas House is a testament to the genius that FLW is. The only downside is that I find myself overspending at the Sumac gift shop each time I visit!

This home is breathtaking. From the outside it doesn't look like much, but the detail inside is amazing. It's easy to drive past and never stop, but you really should check it out when you can.

My wife dragged me to this house, I was literally kicking and screaming. But I ended up being pretty interested in it. It is definitely a unique place to visit and something you should see once in your life.
Bonus: Our tour guide had a slight bloody nose the entire tour and no one said a word! I love social experiments like that.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Paul C.Chicago, IL13812Jun 10, 2013
Talk about wow factor.
PROS: Great history lesson. Absolutely amazing. Cool lights, bowling alley, wine cellar, stained glass, multiple string quartet band lofts, closets everywhere and you can walk around every room unlike the many ropes in Lincolns house. Parking is cheap. A full hour for the tour is totally worth the donation. Cool souveniers.
CONS: $10 suggested donation. No photos inside. I now want my house to look like this and cannot afford it.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Kathy H.Saint Louis, MO249Sep 19, 2014
My dad instilled a love of archtecture and, especially, Frank Lloyd Wright in me. So this place was kind of a shrine for me. My husband - not so much. He can't tell Art Noveau from Art Carney. But once inside, he fell in love.
This is one of the most beautiful houses I've been in. Certainly the most magical.
There's a $10 suggested donation. We wanted to empty our pockets, dig change out of the drink holders, whatever. Totally worth it.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Elaine M.Highland Park, IL1471093836May 3, 2012
I am not a fan of architectural sites however even for the novice such as myself the Dana Thomas house is worth the time.
My husband and I caught the last tour on a Saturday afternoon. It ended up being a private tour as no one else arrived to tour this gem. This place is so cool. Wright was a genius and it would seem probably plagued with OCD. We were told a story of when Frank would return to his creations, if the current owners would have dared to move the furnishings he would move them back to his original design in the middle of the night.
My favorite feature was all the stained glass that he designed.
We had time prior to our tour to look around the gift shop. It is a really nice one, so save a few bucks of your souvenir money to spend here!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Morgan M.Murrieta, CA12332210Dec 12, 2013
I can tell I'm becoming an adult because I have a growing appreciation for things like architecture and home decor. It was pretty sweet to visit this place.
The recommended donation amount for a tour is a STEAL for the amount of time spent in the house. I've visited Hearst Castle and the Winchester Mystery house and NEITHER of those tours were nearly as detailed as this. Plus you had the ability to walk about the entirety of the room, not just staying on some crap, industrial carpet duct taped to the ground.
Super rad spot to check out. Especially during the holiday season as the decor changes slightly.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - I. F.Greenville, SC31345154Jul 14, 2014
The other Yelp reviews do such a good job of evaluating this historic attraction; I'm not sure I could add anything more. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting this FLW home, our guide was informed and enthusiastic. We found the design of this city home more formal than Fallingwater in PA. If you are the least bit interested in architecture or FLW, we recommend visiting this place during your stay in Springfield.

We took a day trip to Springfield (from St. Louis) and this was our first stop. We wanted to make sure we didn't run out of time and we are SO glad we did! This house is amazing! It is so large and absolutely beautiful.
This is a MUST SEE in Springfield, IL!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
